what the hell could this be? engine had been installed about 2 weeks, have ab out 600 miles on it, and it's burning oil at a rate which would scare the EPA! plugs are foul with oil, but my compression (dry) is 170. i don't know the history on the head as just the block was supposedly rebuilt.

Bad seals in your turbo, if your compression is that high across the board it should not be valves or rings. do you oil in your intake? if not may only be the exhaust side.

i doubt if bad turbo seals woul dcause the spark plugs to be covered in oil...... right?
the turbo is only 8 months oldd anyway.

I just went through the same experience. It turns out that the value guides were worn and caused the valve seals to pop up. This all caused large amounts of oil to burn. Some shops have a small camera that can look down into the cylinders (through the spark plug hole) and possible see what's going on. The shop I went to had the camera and it help identify the problem right away and then we went looking for the cause.

If no oil is in you intake, which you can pop off an intercooler hose and feel or look inside for excess oil, then chances are it's the head.

another vote here for some sort of cylinder head issue. i'd guess valve seals. my nt engine's head sucked. that thing would blow smoke at idle, and if it was windy it'd blow back into the car.

valve seals, head gasket, rings, turbo seal. All common places for oil to get in the cylinder.

You said the compression was good so that sort of knocks out the head gasket and rings.

Does it burn at idle or when you get on the boost?

If it were a head problem a ring problem or a valve problem he would not be pushing the compression that he is. If he has bad seals in his turbo he could be kickin the oil into his engine from the compressor side. the problem should lie somewhere that oil could get into the intake or exhaust path. In his case where he is finding oil on the plugs should lie somewhere in the intake and the only place I can think where the two could mix would be the turbo.

You can have good compression with bad valve seals and/or worn valve guides. The valves may seat during the compression check but leak oil into the cylinder during the intake or exhaust stokes.

Compression checks aren't absolute and really should be used as a guideline. For example, if you rings are worn along with valve guides then the oil leaking into the cylinder from the valve guides, seals, etc. would help seal the rings and report good compression.

In your case, chances are it's somewhere in the head.

just took a short trip about 120 miles and the damn thing burned 2 qts of oil. it burns at idle and when i get on it. so much oil gets into the combustion chamber that it knocks really bad. i don't notice much smoke whil ecruising though. a huge cloud does puff out after sitting a t a red light for a minue when i first get going.
the turbo is a big 16g with some c ustom work by dsm performance/extreme turbo.

Any shaft play on that turbo? It does sound like you have oil leaking out of the head (valve guides or seals). Also you might want to check & make sure that the oil return line isn't cracked (around the flex section).. I had that problem & it only got worse over time the more it cracked. You could have a combination of problems causing this excessive oil use.

Hey terminaltsi,

How is your Idle?

16G, I get what you are saying. But with that oil consumption and it coming from the head Im sure that he would notice either or both, a rough idle and serious lack in power. Also for it to be even at 170 across the board kinda makes me still wonder.

oil consumption

i've always found that if you remove the exhaust manifold and see any oil in the exhaust ports, its usually a head related problem. i had a valve guide come completely loose in my head and i was burning MASSIVE amounts of oil. about like what you said. in addition, i had a small tre 16g that had the seals go out on it. it only had 5000 miles on it. so i rebuilt the whole engine and everything is good now. does the car smoke at idle? if so, more than likely rings. under boost == turbo. if the car smokes at first, and then goes away == valve seals.

it idles great. very smooth. it does blow smoke at idle though. it also blows smoke under boost. the engine seems good, but i'm getting huge amounts of knock due to the excessive oil in teh combustion chambers, so it basically runs like crap. the only time it doesn't blow obvious smoke is when cruising.

P.s. compression is more like 162-170 across all 4, i was just giving a r0ound number witht eh 170.
