1998 GSX - 40k - Spark Plugs Destroyed - PLEASE READ

My 1998 GSX has 40k miles, aparently the AC belt broke and caused some problems with the timing belt, i believe the valves are bent, also two of the spark plugs are destroyed!

I'm hoping to find someone who has run into this problem before. (not the timing belt problem) but the wasted spark plug problem. So I can determine wether I need to start looking for a new engine. I havent taken the head off the car yet, I plan on doing that Sunday.

Symptoms:
Can't crank the car over by hand
Not leaking any oil
Spark plugs are destroyed
looks as if the valves are toasted

Pictures are attached below:

Please give me some feedback

well i'm sorry to say this but it looks as if the belt may have jumped a tooth or so or maybe even broken...i've seen plugs that looked like that before but the rest was in the piston, i mean not just the cc, mashed into the piston and if you can't turn it over by hand with those plugs out(should be easy) i'd say that you probably need a new motor or a full rebuild if te castings are ok

there is something loose in the cylinders. The timing belt has more than likely jumped or broken. it looks like the heads of the valves have been snapped off and came in contact with the plugs.

this probably ate up your pistons too. but pull the head and investigate.

i agree. looks just like one i had, a valve broke off inside, beat the plug and the piston to death. head was toast. looks like you got 2 valves at least, broke off in 1 and 3. no way the plugs can hit the pistons, but the broke valves can. you are beyond just a cylinder head. you need a new motor.

That is very unfortunate. If you can't hand crank it, I wonder if it's seized up and is telling you that it needs a transplant. :(

Possible to save the block, but internals I bet are questionable at best, and the head is an automatic replacement. :(

Good luck to you sir, I'll drink an extra one for you when the fireworks go off later.

my advice is:
DONT TOUCH IT!

call up mitsu and see if they will work on it under warrenty if yes then cool , if no then start messing with the engine.

looks as if there may be bits of valve bounceing around the motor and hitting the spark plugs...
cant turn it over by hand, probibly shredded a piston and theres parts of rings or valves jamming the piston from moveing.

good luck mabye mitsu can give you a new motor..... you know....mabye even a new 4g63......out of an evo :D !!!!

ok back to the pipe for me

later,
Lithos

Lithos,

Thanks for the advice. Thats exactally what I'm going to do now!! Sounds like a great idea. Car was manufactured in Feb of 98, pherhaps it sat on the lot for a few months. I might be in luck! I'll keep everyone posted on what happens.

yeh dude you might want to get ahold of mitsu and see if they will fix it under your warrenty. IF not i have a complete 2g head sitting in my garage. Send me a p.m or email or get ahold of me on aim

my email is import_racer321@ yahoo.com and my aim is BigBADGSX

good luck man

I called mitsubishi today, looks like my warranty was up in feb of this year. bummer eh? I pulled the head off, the pistons are toasted.. I'll have to post a pic of the top half of the engine. My head is also cashed. Looks like I'll be needing a new engine after all. This is a car I plan on driving for a long time.

Looking for repair suggestions. I'd like to make some good power. I have a whole 2g enigne.

its a vicious life cycle

i was hoping i could just replace the head, you know, port and polish, put some nice cams in there, and perhaps buy a turbo! no longer is that possible.

thanks for all the help and info, im sure ill be hanging around here while i get this sorted out

repair suggestions welcomed

#14 ·
id say replace it with a 6 bolt motor while your at it and never have to worry about 2g mechanical symptoms again

#15 ·
did you check the turbo? i had the spark plug in my #2 cylinder break off and it chipped one of the exhaust valves and chipped my turbine wheel blades on my 100 mile turbonetics T3/T4 hybrid turbo. good thing the turbo is under warranty. im sending it in monday. and looking for a 1g head.

my pistons are scared pretty bad, my dad (long time mechanic) thinks we could maybe grind the suckers, and they'd be okay, it looks as if theres a crack in the #1 piston, which really erks me, i wish that crack wasnt there!!! then i could do plan A, get the pistons looking alright, and replace the head

Bryan

anyone ever try this with scared but not totally destroyed pistons??

no it sounds like its time for a 6bolt. build a 6bolt and dont look back. just buy a jdm engine if you're strapped for time.

update(){
i looked at the pistons under a microscope, no cracks, just scars from where the pistons hit the valves.

new plan is as follows:
buy 2g stock head
buy engine gasket kit, head bolts, AC Belt, timing belt cover, etc.

smoothing out the scars on the pistons
putting 2g head back on car

if scenero #1:
car doesnt smoke, doesnt blow oil through the rings, i'll drive it until it breaks, in the mean time i can build a killer 6-bolt stroker motor

if scenero #2:
car smokes, blows oil through the rings, i'll buy a JDM rebuilt 6-bolt

scenero #1 will cost $450 - $500 and two days of work (one to take the head off the car, one to put the head back on the car) in addition to a few days to wait for parts and stuff

scenero #2 will cost the price of the JDM engine $1,800 - $2,000 the price of the stuff to do the conversion, perhaps two days of full work to get the engine out of the car, three days to get the engine back in the car, and one week give or take to make the car run right. total cost : $3,000

i vote for scenero #1

i should know by at the latest this weekend if the car

go with plan #1 as long as you plan to build a killer 6bolt;)

You won't get 12,000 for that, unfortunately. If you sell it after you fix it, you will get 13,000 for it. You've got nice mileage on it. As for the EVO8, I'm not sure the financial situation you're in. You would be on the frontier of a new 4g63 tuning(in the US anyway). Also, the last line kinda borders on the rule of no selling.

Hope everything works out.

#25 ·
I think most people here would tell you to go with a JDM 6-bolt but you already shot that idea down, that's probably why you aren't getting much feedback.

Wait a minute... you didn't just turn this into a for sale add did you? Have you read the rules lately?

I'm not going to fix whats not broken. If my engine will run for another 30,000-70,000 miles, by all means im going to get what i can out of it. when my current bottom end fails me, i'll go to a JDM 6-bolt or a rebuilt 6-bolt. It all depends on this weekend. I should know by tomorrow wether I'll need a 6-bolt or not.
