Ok guys, I was having a really bad rattle with my sunroof on the 97 GSX. Anything I did, such as pushing against the shade cover or glass did nothing to stop it. The rattle was a thin metal to thin metal type of rattling sound and happened quite often, such as certain exhaust tones, when the sub was on, or by different bumps in the road.
After reading through the other threads, I didn't seem to find the answer to my problem. So what did I do? I started banging the roof of the car with my fist like a pissed off DSM owner normally would do.
I narrowed the rattle to be coming from almost inside where the shade cover would retract to. Seeing how I like to figure out how things work, I decided to dissect the sunroof and do some exploring to find and eliminate this rattle. By following these simple steps, you too can be able to do this on your own car as well.
Step one:
Bang the roof until you have determined where the rattle is coming from. Looks like it's coming from back there!
Step two:
I opted to remove my glass sunroof for ease of working around that area. That and who knows what else could be making noise in the sunroof so the less in the way then the easier to work. Take out the 6 torx (sp?) bolts to complete the task. I believe the T25 bit did the trick for me. Here I have 3 out already.
Step three:
Remove the two phillips head screws that hold that black metal piece on as seen in the first picture. It's the piece right before the actual roof of your car. Once they're out, pull the piece forward and out. Mine had a slight bit of arch to it. My guess is the peak of the arch in the middle was what kept vibrating against my roof.
Step four:
The solution. I wanted to put some type of sticky-backed foam on this metal piece where I felt it was making metal to metal contact. After a little searching around the house I managed to find some uninstalled velcro. Get the fuzzy side of it, cut it in small strips, and place it across the top rear portion of this metal piece like so.
Here is just a fuzzy picture of a fuzzy piece of velcro. Sorry for the bad focus. The lack of lighting made it hard for the camera to adjust.
Step five:
I also placed some fuzzy velcro on the bottom of this piece where there already where some type of stick on felt. You might want to do the same as I'm not positively sure if it were the top or bottom velcro application the ceased the rattling. Here I just stuck the velcro between the already existing 2 pieces of padding.
Step six:
Put that sucker back where it came from. You may have to push down or angle the back of the piece downward just a hair so it slides under the roof. It's not too difficult and different cars may vary.
Step seven:
Reinstall your glass sunroof, and shade cover if you happend to remove that for any reason. My upper/rear one was out in these pics, but it's not necessary for this job I feel.
Ok, that's it! Go out and drive, and don't worry about any more annoying sunroof rattling. I know there are other things that may be causing this rattle too, such as not having the shades properly in their track, or even the metal hook that catches the sunroof when it retracts so feel free to post any vfaq's in here of what you did to eliminate your rattle.
Enjoy.
