Well ive been thinking about it, and how hard is it to put a 4g63 into a mirage?
i know u have to go w/ the newer 4g63(evo4+) but thats about.
how diff. is this swap? and what is needed to make it work? cuz i deff. wouldnt mind having an evo5 ;).
ive been thinking about getting a 2nd gen DSM. but i can get a EVO5 engine/tranny for a good deal. and seeing how a mirage can be picked up for dirt cheap i wouldnt mind making an evo5 over a 2nd gen.

thanks

well as far as i can tell it wouldnt be any harder than lets say putting a 4g63 into a civic hatch.... it is possible but almost everything under the hood will have to be custom made. you can do it w/ the older mirages no problem but the newer ones are not so freindly.

snowman4us,
first, what year mirage would you be putting this in? I'll tell you what I know, a 1g 4g63 will go directly into a 1989 1.6 turbo mirage/colt/summit. The hook is though that there were only 1500 of those exact cars distributed in the US. It's hard to find one in decent condition. On that note, you can put a 1g 4g63 into an 88-92 1.5 NA mirage/colt/summit with some extra parts that you would need to get. If you're planning on putting a 4g63 into a 92+ mirage I know it will fit but I don't know the extent of the conversion and I can't think of the site will all of the info. But for 88-92 c/s/m's check out these sites...

Hope some of that helped you :)

If you have a 97+ Mirage you need an Evo IV+ engine.
Anything older, use a DSM or Evo III or less engine.
Either is a direct drop in. After that its just wiring and accesories and deciding which tranny to use, but no orientation problems.

thanks guys
i always thought that the mirage was on the same frame as the evo's of its day. i swear i have seen ppl say that its almost a direct swap to make a mirage into an evo. this is just an idea im throwing around.
i come from the subaru world, and there everything is a direct swap. wiring might not be the same but engine wise u can put any engine almost in any chasie. so i was thinking of getting a 97+ mirage and putting in a EVO5 motor into it w/ a AWD tranny. but i wasnt sure on how mutch work as actualy involved.

thanks

kirill,
i've found some info for you to start you off... click here
seems to hard to me. you would be better off with a 3g or 4g mirage cuz it seems easier. personally i'm doing the 3g 4g63 swap as we speak. if you want more info on 4g and 5g mirages check out that site, it has tons of info.

The hardest part will be making the car AWD. It is not just a matter of bolting up an Evo rear end under a Mirage. The car will need to be "back halved" by welding in the Evo subframe and gas tank, plus a lot of other odds and ends.

axles, hubs, brakes. Lots. I can't remember the name of the shop that specializes in the conversion, but I think it is a substantial list of parts and they charge about 10 grand.

Of course there are ways to do it cheaper, but I'm guessing you want something a little better looking then this:

Go to 4g61t.org and they always have stuff being sold. Actually a guy in NY is selling a converted AWD shell for $2400. All you would need is the motor and driveshaft. A guy in MD is selling his already swapped colt for $2800 and I saw the car at the GMU meet and it is in excellent condition. If you want to do the swap into a 89-92 hatch with the 1.5L motor then grab one with a manual first to make it easier on yourself. You will need a complete 4g63 motor with wiring harness and ecu. Best bet is to get a 90 4g63 if you can and the matching ecu. You need MPI relay, transistor pack, and a couple more things that I can't rememeber off hand. www.lilevo.com has the write up and part numbers of the corresponding motor mounts you will need. But to use the stock manual tranny you will need a 4g63 n/t flywheel, unless you already have an 1989 turbo csm like I do, in which case all you need is a complete 90 4g63 and 90-94 ecu. You will have to swap pins 6 and 14 for a 91-94 ecu but the motor will bolt right in with everything already there.

thanks for more imput.
For the evo rear subframe, does it need to be welded in or are there holes already in the chasie that have caps over them? the reason i ask is, if u buy a FWD impreza(from early 90's) it already has all the holes and everything just missing the parts for the AWD.
this seems like its quiet a bit of work to do this swap.
i know it cost about 3-5K to make a FWD Imp. into a Ver.3 STi(AWD), but it seems like these Mirages dont want to be EVO's that easlyily :(

Indeed. I wish Mitsubishi had taken this approach to all their cars, i.e. Mirage, Lancer, Eclipse, and Galant. Then there would be a lot of possible conversions running around. Unfortunately, FWD and AWD have different chassis codes and enough differences to make cutting and welding a neccesity.
