Any tips on taking off the lower intercooler pipe?

I just quickly tried to take it off to put on a Greddy Lower Intercooler pipe I got from my friend for free, but with no avail. Didn't really try b/c I didn't jack the car up, and I only had my head and arm under the car. Any ways to make it easier to get off? Should I just use some muscle or what? Thanks

Is it possible for you to jack it up and get underneath it somehow? Ramps maybe? It's just so much reaching...you'll wind up exhausting yourself trying to reach all the way down there. It's just easier getting underneath it somehow.

Yeah, the best way is going to be to get under that sum biotch.

Taking the wheel off helps to but if you can't do that just turn it.

I was under the car.. just my head and arm though.. it was night so my dad didn't feel like going through his messy garage for the jack. We're getting it out today and putting it on stands so it doesn't drop.

should I just give it hell?

Yeah. It's not hard to get off. As long as the intercooler is secured, it's not that hard to get off. Just loosen up the clamps really well and pull. You won't hurt anything.

If its sticking on the fitting, just use a philips head screwdriver to free it up. Just pry between the hose and pipe, work the driver in a inch or two and go around the fitting as much as you can. Then twist the hose and it'll pull right off.;)

or

If you no longer want the hose, you can slice it lengthwise with a utility knife, but then you need to be careful not to scracth the ic pipe or cut yourself.

It looks like it'll fit if I take that off. I don't know what the hell it is, so I'm not touching it until you guys give the okay. :)

I don't have a 2g but to me it looks like there are 2 clamps on that piece. One in front and one towards the IC. Am I correct? If so I would say remove it and see what's on the other side. It looks like it will shorten it and expose another lip for the new longer pipe to slide on to. By the way, that greedy pipe looks all hacked up. Whats up with that??

Edit...
Now that I look at it a little closer, it looks like if you remove the coupler with the lip from the IC then remove the rubber coupler off the end of the greedy pipe with the 2 hose clamps on it the new pipe and the IC should fit up.

Edit again....
Now that I really look at it and think back, I'm fairly positive that is the black box thingy that all the 2g guys say is useless and can be thrown away. Somebody with a 2g kick in a post here.

my friend painted it black so it'd look "stock" lol.

It doesn't look like it's hooked up to anything (like wires and stuff), and it's hooked up to the IC. I'm going to take it off and just hook the greddy pipe up. Then take it for a drive and see what happens.

I gaurantee a 2g owner will chime in here and verify what I just said in my last post. Useless box that does nothing.

Take that Honda-esque box off and smash it with a hammer.

See, I told ya :D Us 1g guys don't have that crap on there ;) What is that stupid thing for anyway??
That's what I'm wondering!!

I can't get that fucking thing off!! The screw is in the worst spot! I'd smash it, but I want to be able to put it back on if I need to bring it in for warranty work.. I really am considering smashing it with a small sledge!!

Stupid plastic boxes. I usually just tear them off and they break =).

just took that little thing off with no prob...

now here's the next obstacle.. how the hell do I ge the pipe on?! the rubber peice makes the pipe too long, and I can't get it to connect to the intercooler. Do I just unscrew the IC and move it over, then connect it and tighten it, and put it back??

I got it off.. I just need to take off the clamps and pull it off the IC lip, and then pull down b/c it wasn't really screwed on.. the plastic thing was just pushed through a hole and it stayed. lol.

Now I gotta figure out how to get the pipe on all the way.

Great idea! I'll go try it.

here are pics of that plastic thing!

That little plastic thing on top was what was holding it other than the clamps. I just pulled down and it came off. :D

Here's how I've been working on the car:

not fun!

Cool! You have... err- correction- had one of the "rare" silencer boxes they added to the lower IC on 95's only. Finally somebody posts clear pics of it !! It should be in a museum, but definately NOT on your car. :p

BTW, if you take out the filter/MAS/turbo intake you'll find it much easier to do up those top clamps of the lower IC where it attaches to the turbo. :scholar: :)

Answer to what that plastic thing is for.

There are federal requirements for pass/drive by vehicle noise. Some of this noise is created from the intake air. That box acts as a muffler to quiet that noise. Thats it. There are several vehicles with these mufflers on them. Now you know.;)

got it on now. :D

Thanks everyone. I'll post pics in a few. :D
