My friend just got a 95 mustang and I've been looking for 6x8s for him. I keep finding the same model called both 5x7 and 6x8, as if it they were the same thing. Are they the same thing? If not, 5x7s would fit very easily in the 6x8 mounts, no brackets needed, right?

They are different. Ford did that in a lot of models during the 90's. The "premium" audio package normally got the bigger speakers. You can buy brakets to make the conversion.

The mounting holes are the same, but the speaker opening may be off slightly. Best bet is to take the old speaker out and compare it to the 6x8s that you're thinking of purchasing.

The biggest difference between the speakers is sound. The 6x8 has more surface area than the 5x7 and should give you more volume if the efficiencies are comparable.
