Alright i am usually the guy answering questions but this time i have one. i am not to well versed in the awd driveline.

I have a 2gb gst that has a walking crank (big surprise i know) instead of going through SBR or someone else i am buying a 91 tsi AWD for $400 and raping it for parts (6 bolt block, head, 14b so i can port it for now) but my question is about the AWD driveline.

Can i put a 1g driveline into my 2g car? the tsi is an auto so i know i have to change my cams for the head and i would need a new transfer case. But will it work? i am really hoping i can rip the driveline off the TSI and throw it on my GST and get the AWD launch.

you cant put a 1g tranny in your car anyway, you would have to get a 2g awd tranny, i have a friend that is in my local dsm club that changed his gs-t to a gs-x. you will need a AWD rear subframe(fwd does not have anywhere to bolt up the rear diff), 2g awd tranny, 2g t-case, AWD gastank, AWD flywheeel, and 2g rear diff
fwd->awd
alot of time and money

yeah forget it then. i will find a junk 2g AWD later on to do the swap. i am just going to part out the rest and keep the 6 bolt block, head and turbo for my swap.

But thanks for theh straight answer.

A little bit of cutting just with a dremel and hole saw, nothing bad at all.

I think it's a little more involved than that. Otherwise everyone would do it.

There's a vendor that does it. Costs something like $1500-$1800. All they do for that price is prep the car for the conversion.

Got pictures of the modding? It's not that I don't believe you, it's actually the other way around. I'm interested in seeing the results :)
Me too, I'd like to see anything you've got. I've got 2 95 AWDs and one of them is going under the knife to convert my Spyder this summer. Who the hell needs 3 DSMs anyways :p Seems easy enough, almost all bolt on. I'd just like a heads up on the drilling for the rear. Thanks!

some one in my area is selling a complete awd swap for $100 it works but he is moving and doesnt want to move it with him, so woudl that be a good deal?

A complete AWD swap? What does this include for so little? Unless you can do the fab work it is going to cost a lot more than the parts.

what about the cutting and welding of the floor board in the trunk in the gst's it sinks down in the gsx's it pops up

how in the hell did you get past that with a dremel and hole saw?

no welding, the gsx subframe has slighly longer bolts that hold it in. Cut 2 small holes in the trunk so you can drop in the longer bolts and your good to go. You only need the awd tranny, awd rear sub frame, rear diff, driveshaft, awd gastank and the 2 longer bolts on the driver side and thats it.

oh and why switch out the auto cams? they have better low end torque then the manual ones
the auto cams have literally no topend power at all. The previous owner of my car replaced the head because it was warped when he bought it, and it had auto cams on it (which once realized were swapped for the stock manual cams)

It was kind of fun to have power @ 2k RPM on the 14b, but having it GONE at 4600rpm is really pathetic. The stock cams are bad enough for sacrificing top end power.

You also have to weld in carrier bearing mounts for the driveshaft. Making your own would be easier. I used the factory mounting plates, but I would fabricate my own if I had to do it again.
Make sure you can use the e brake cables also. I used awd cables b/c it came attached to the rear brakes already and didnt feel like removing it.

Agreed with what most others here say. It can be done, converting a GST to a GSX using the same generation parts. 1g Parts are different lenghts. 2g parts can be used, but you'll have to make all your own mounting locations. Good luck.

Its not as easy on a Spyder as it is a fwd hard top. I went by that write-up excapt for the rear bolts you either have to go through the side of the frame rail (cut it then weld it back) or cut out the x-brace then weld it back. The front bolts, the only way I found was to go throught the frame rail. Its not really really hard but its not easy.

Oh and you cant use a 1g awd for the swap, sorry
