when you touch the blades of your turbo with your finger and turn it by hand..after you stop aplying (slight) pressure should the turbo free spin or stop after you take your finger off of it? in other words..how easily should a healthy turbo spin? my turbo spins easily..but will not free spin on its own. i have no idea how easily a "healthy turbo should spin. thx for any info. btw..my car has 85k miles....but i found out yesterday i have a 16g (!!!) which the last owner left on the car. so i do not know how many miles are on the 16g.

I believe the condition you are describing is normal. I have spun my turbo compressor and it is the same way as have been others that I have played with. The only turbo that I have seen that can freely spin was a ball bearing turbo.

It really depends on how big is your turbo, I've had few different size turbo's and I noticed that biger they are longer they spin :) that's because of the larger (heavier) internals, Small 16 will not but the 18 will, that has it's good sides and bad - larger turbo will need more force (time - lag) to spool-up but it will stay spooled longer between gears etc....
That's why I would love to have a huge ball-bearing turbo :)
