it probably has been asked and answered before but i couldn't find it here. (i did search quite a lot) so my question is: is it possible to remove both balance shafts without pulling the engine?

It'll be a bitch to get the rear shaft out while it's still in the car. There's very little space between the engine and the inner fender, and since the rear shaft is attached the oil pump, you'll have to get creative with trying to pull it out as one item.

I had more trouble with the front shaft than the rear since it's higher up on the motor. I had to unbolt all motor mounts except for the tranny mount in order to lower the engine enough. I also used some pliers to bend the lower flange on the frame to get a little more clearance. It's still easier than pulling the whole motor.
