Changing the fuel filter from the top of the car?

It looks like a nightmare according to some of the posts I read....

Will I strip something as a given?

It does suck if it has never been changed before. I got the bottom line off first then disconnected the filter bracket from the firewall. I disconnected the top line from the fuel rail and took the filter out with the line attached. It was much easier to remove the top line with the filter out of the car, for me anyway. You will also have to remove the battery and tray and possibly the UIP.

Mine was easy too. I didn't remove jack, except the fuel filter. I undid the top connection, undid the filter clamp and the two bolts holding the clamp, removed the filter clamp, slightly and very carefully bent the filter down a little, undid the bottom connection and put the new one in.
Flare nut wrenches are a good thing.

all you need is a 6-point socket on the top and one of those fuel line open end wrenches for the bottom. and you'll also want some seriously strong penetrating liquid. i use P.B. Blaster myself. works sweet.

If you think 1g sucks, try changing one on a 2g. I tried to do it 3 times and gave up. The 4th time, I decided I was for sure going to do it, and I did. If you pull everything out that you can on a 1g, you shouldnt have any problems.

The 2g fuel filter is farther down on the firewall than the 1g. When you remove EVERYTHING it is still hard to get to. I pulled the Batt, batt tray, etc. The way I finally got it loose from the bottom was to put some vice grips on the fuel line fitting, then used an open end wrench on the filter. Man that sucked. :)

i pulled the battery, tray, and mounting. mostly for convenience. the fuel filter was pretty easy, the top came off with no problem, and the bottom part we used two wrenches and just had to squeze them together to get it to loosen.

we did it from the top, i dont know how you could do it from the bottom. we did end up jacking the car up thinking taking the entire line off of the car would be easier.

you can say im dumb, but i definately felt a difference in the way the car ran, after i changed the filter.

I am replacing fuel lines from the backseat to the fuel rail. I guess if i can't really remove it I'll just cut off the ends :)

the filter in my 95 tsi awd was such a pain in the ass that i recomend you take it to some one to have it done, ok first off the filter is a pain to get to, when i did mine it was in my drive way a 11o'clock at night and that was my first mistake. second the filter had been changed by and idot befor me and that person had managed to cross thread the new filter when it was put in, only way to get it out was to totaly twist off the fule line. yes i just kept twisting on my filter untill the fule line broke, the to my horr the mitisu dealer quoted a new fule line at 450$ went to the crystler dealer ship and picked it up for 27bucks. the i got home and spent a week trying to get the new fule line in, its impossable with out taking apart the the whole front sepenison. finaly i bought some industraly grade fule line and cut the stock one. so now my fule line turns into rubber right before it goes up into the engin bay and back to steal right befor the filter, ya iknow it's getto but i flared the ends on my steal fule line and doubble clamped it.

The 2g are a total PITA. I just tried again a couple of nights ago, and again gave up. I am going to attempt it again tonight, wish me luck.

He He.I did mine a few months ago but it was such a PITA that I decided to do the STEVETEK -6AN lines so I don't have to cut my knuckles in the future.I'm still getting a slight leak from the fuel pressure sender adapter even though it's tightened all the way.I'm gonna have to look at it again.My car idled like shit before(550cc densos,255lph pump)I also switched to an AEM fuel pressure regulator and I was able to lower the pressure to 2.4 bar from stock 3.2 bar.The car idles perfect,albeit a little lumpy due to HKS cams.Before I could not get it to idle at anything under 1000rpms

You guys are gonna think I'm a fuggin genius after this one........PIPE WRENCH !

The lines come off so easy when using a small pipe wrench, you'd think that you were a certified dsm mechanic !

I first learned of how great the pipe wrench was when I did my fuel pump upgrade 2 years ago.

Those were some of the tightest nuts on the dayum car and when using the pipe wrench, the litterally spun right off !

Try it and give feedback.

Of course you know that a 12" pipe wrench is gonna be waaayyy too big, so get yourself a small 6" and make life easy !
