Hey i just wanted to give everyone an update and info on pulling out the half shafts and transaxle. I am in the middle of the job right now. I am wating on my buddy to bring the lights over seeing as i am doing with nothingn but the light in the garage and street light. lol

When we went to pull out the the F@(&ing half shaft, right side first. in the chilton it says to use a gear pulley or equivalent, the last time i did half shafts i just hammer them out with no damage. I go to hammer these.... nothing didnt even budge. So we go the gear puller... it snapped the puller. go a bigger one... ruined the treads and mushroomed the shaft more.

my friend pulled up DSMtalk on his phone and found some posts on the topic and found that you have to cut them or use a press. So i took the spindle off and headed to my bubby scott's at Scotty's Racing Technology and he let me use his press. that by the way was blocked by a 1200 hp 800+ cubic inch big block.

We had to use 10 tons of pressure to press the damn shalf out!!!!

bubbys here going back to work wish me luck.

I never pull the halfshaft either. I just did my clutch we pulled the passenger side axle and just unbolted the half shaft mount which gave us enough play to pull it from the tranny. If you pull both axles you are working too hard. Jeff will probably say that if I pulled one I was working too hard.

fwd can be a bit more of a pain in the ass as it doesn't have a half shaft. On a 2g I pop the upper ball joints, remove the brake line holder and unlock the steering. I pull the tie rod out on the driver side then remove the axle. Pulling back/down on the knuckle you can move it out. Then tuck out of the way. Pull the tie rod towards the passenger, pull the axle out. Then zip tie it to the strut so its up as high as possible. Then go to work.

i wish i would have known that before hand. But it has 150,000 miles with the stock half shafts i have no clue when they have both been replaced. so i was going to put some cheap 70 dollar ones in till i have more power. the old ones when i pulled them out were bad! if i break them its all good!

Your talking about where the axle goes into the wheel bearing?
If those are bad you may need to have that pressed out, unless you want to replace the wheel bearing at the same time. When I replaced both the ones on my fwd 1g I had to use a shop press, for the rear on my 2g awd it also required being pressed.

Although not the same, your issue may be similar.
This thread has some on my struggles pictured in it on post 7.

I do believe the OP got the axles out of the hubs realizing he didn't have to, but is going to put some remans in. I highly suggest cleaning out the splines of the hub with a wire brush and coating them with antiseize along with the new axle splines.
Yea that is exaclty what i am going to do. I got some new axles they were only like 150 for the pair (at advance). I have been trying to get this car back together but between no being able to help get the tranny up there and it raining like everyday i have a couple hours to work on it.

I did press them out like i said in my first post. I had to use a huge press. It took 10 tons. I am gunna clean them out and put the anti seize on them.

I had to have my 8 year old cousin to operate the jack to get the tranny up there.
