Constructive Critism on my '99 RS Please

I am new to this forum and I have big plans for my RS. I do have a lot planned for it. Getting rid of the current Blitz body kit and putting on the Drift style with low style side skirts. I will be removing the wing on the trunk also and the Carbon Fiber hood is faded and has some cracks so I'm just going to have it painted with the car. I am going to lower it and am wanting some new 5 spoke rims, 18's or 19's. It has underglow now but I'm not sure about it in the future. I have been searching around the forum and found that I'm going to be lowing with some Tokico Illumina Shocks with H&R Sport lowering springs, I am still looking for a good header and downpipe, right now I'm just running a ebay header and downpipe and its wrapped.
Click pictures for larger view.

Please any constructive criticism is welcome!

Stock body is better than any other body kit.
High rise wing or no wing.
Don't go any bigger than 18"s
Paint all the red in your interior black.
Sorry to hear about your hood. Maybe you can just re-clear it...?
I hear greddy makes a good header for the 420A.
I do like them stock but I already have this Drift style front with a similar rear bumper that I have now and I like the way it looks.
I think they look great without a wing.
I have 17's and I'm just tired of them because they are all beat up from being curbed before I got the car.
I actually planned on painting it all black inside too, haha.
The hood actually has cracks in it so it would have to be sanded down to the weave and re-epoxied so I'm just going to have it painted.
I'll look into the GReddy headers, I heard that 4-2-1 gives you more torque. Should I look for something with that setup?

How about when you take the Blitz sideskirts off, make sure you take the stock sideskirts off before putting the other ones on, because whoever put that kit on clearly forgot to do that.
HAHA I had no idea. I did buy my car like this when I was 16 and its been great but I'm 20 now and I see how much crap was done to it and I've fixed a lot but these are the things I have to change otherwise I want to just toss out the car. I'll make sure that its done right this time since I had no control over what the previous owner did to it.

I'm really pissed that he had the side skirts riveted on to the fender and rear panel. I'm having door hinge problems and its going to be a pain to get to the hinges now.

Thanks guys!

I feel the same way! Doesn't look all that bad.

And now my opinion.

new kit and skirts. Patch holes, paint car black and get a new VENTED CF hood if possible.

Halo headlights.

STOCK rear tails, With night shade on em.

17" Konig wheels.

high Rise spoiler Or none at all.

Where's your clutch pedal?

The red looks ok- But there is too much. If there wasn't soo much red it would look ok. paint it black, Or if atall possible get the Replacements that look like CF.

And Don't Fucking bash me guys, I do what I want when I please. My opinion Is my opinon, not :tat: yours.

I guess you could say that I am not your typical dsmer...I personally like the way your car looks. It is different and not like ever other car out there. That is the part I like about body kits / wings you can be different from everyone else with all the choices.

just my $0.02
Thats exactly how I am. One of the reasons I want to get rid of the wing on the back too is because almost every eclipse I see has a wing on the back. Too many of them have the Blitz kit though and that bugs me. There is a Cavalier in town and it looks so similar to mine that people I know ask me why I was at this certain place, and it wasn't me. I want it to be 'one-of-a-kind' again'.

The car is ugly. The body kit, the rims, the wing, the stero system, everything about it. If you want to be different make it simple. Stock bumpers, add a lip, some nice wheels, and go wingless.

Well I wasn't asking for you to call it ugly, and the stereo system doesn't matter here, its getting changed too once all this other stuff is done. I am planning on making it simple, but not stock.

That video wasn't necessary either, especially from a mod. I agree its not great, but thats why I'm working on it.

I guess you probably didn't realize exactly what 'constructive' criticism here is on DSMTalk. I've give you some of my criticism and thoughts though...

Before you do ANYTHING to the body, you're going to have to get that riveted sideskirt fixed. Whoever did that was an absolute retard. It takes a whole five minutes to remove a sideskirt. About double that to mount an aftermarket one (if it's made out of a good quality material). Now that you have rivets in the side panel behind your door, you're going to be out a bit of bodywork. I would venture to say that those sideskirts themselves are pretty much ruined now too.

People around here are going to bash a body kit. Believe me, your 2gb already had a huge bubble ass and a nice open mouth (two things all male DSMers like) and somebody had to ruin that... um... wonderful look. It's your car. You want a body kit, nobody is stopping you. I not bashing you for having one - believe me I like a *few* of them (as long as they're not on my car), but I think you're failing to realize to the exact extent what's it going to cost to get that car looking really good. My advice if you keep any body kit on that car is definitely to have NO WING whatsoever. Sell that wing that's on there to help pay for the body work.

The interior you can make work. It does look a bit funky red, but from what I see it's a bit well done. I think what I don't like about it is red and black is really clich'e and is overdone in the car 'tuner' world. You say you're wanting to be different, yet red and black is as common as night and day.

17s are fine for your car. If you keep it red and black, which it's seeming more and more like you're going to have to do because of the work involved, get black wheels. Nothing else is going to look good on it color wise.

The stereo can come last. I agree it looks a bit plain from what I can see, but I'm one to hold on that last. My POS 2gb has a POS Kenwood deck in it and it's fine. As long as it plays CDs and makes the lady in the passenger seat happy why would one complain?

I went to a body shop in town that does mostly collision work and he said probably $3k for what I'm wanting to do and recommended I went out of town to an old drag strip that all these companies are at now and ask around there. I was going to replace the fenders but I've seen too many that don't fit right. I COMPLETELY regret buying the car this way, but I was 16 and loved the look.
Red paint on the inside looks good in pictures, but is crappy. There are bubbles everywhere and the A-Pillars are chipping because its soft and they didn't use the right paint or didn't prep it right. I'm going to take the time and paint it black and make sure its done right.

The stereo sounds great, its a Pioneer Premier DEH-670MP, Hifonics 1606D amp, and a 15" Kicker L5. I am going to get 2 12"s after all the body work is done and fiberglass the enclosures.

#15 ·
That quote might be a bit low after everything is said and done. Believe me I'm not bashing you at all. I just want to make sure, especially with the bodywork, that you know what you're getting into. What I'm trying to figure out is how you said you've drove this car since you were 16. You said you are 20 now right? That's four years. Has this car had these problems for four years?!?

#16 ·
Well just recently its really gotten under my skin. None of my friends even care and they all love it, but since its my car and I see all the things that could be better it bugs me.
The paint started getting bad that last several months and then the paint chips has been going on for years. I just don't think it was prepped right and was done cheaply.
The shop said it'd take like 10 work days to get it done, but he doesn't do this kind of modding, its more of an insurance/collision repair place.
He walked around my car and saw what he'd be working with.

It's your call. Personally the look of the 2gB stock is absolutely sexy, unique, curvy, and attractive. I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you want to put a body kit on your car and make it flashy and look good...go right ahead. Personally, I would rather make sure the engine is running 100%, new fluids all around, new belts, battery, alternator, pulleys, gaskets, plugs, wires, coils, etc.

You'd have basically a like-new car that will look the same way it does, but at least it will start every time you turn the key. No sense it having it look really good if it's not going to run every time you turn the key.

That's my 2psi.

#18 ·
Hey man I think it looks like poo ! but with a lot of money and time you can turn it around and make something out of it.:) SORRY?

Specially- remove the wing and lower it with some higher profile tire's for starters !

#19 ·
Well I actually just had it in and got new belts (timing belt done) and water pump and coolant flushed, head gasket replaced, about to go in and get an oil change Wednesday with the 25-point inspection. It is mechanically sound. I'm not trying to get it flashy cause thats what it is now. I just want something that people see and nobody else has, there are a lot of stock eclipses in town and I just wanted something different. I think now it sticks out like a sore thumb and it just needs to be taken down a notch or two.
Here is the bumper I got and test fitted:

I know it has a lot of work, but its all good. Its my hobby now so this is all I have to work with. I have all the parts I need and am just waiting to go to another shop on Wednesday and get an estimate and some other info.

Thanks guys.

#20 ·
You're going to take it in for an oil change? If you can change/test fit a bumper, you can do an oil change yourself.

Unless of course, taking it there is free, then I understand.

Not only that, but you can buy a repair manual, such as a Chiltons or Haynes, or if you're really bold, a FSM (Factory Service Manual). Then you'll have a ton of information at your fingertips to solve car problems. Then you can stack up on tools and all that and become self sufficient at your hobby.

Plus, it looks good with the ladies when you're out sweating under the hood, or underneath your car, working on it.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings but you did ask for criticism and opinions. To be honest I have that vid link saved just for occasions like this. I know everyone has their own "taste" in what looks good but you did ask for it. This is for the most part a performance oriented forum and I am surprised that the members have been as nice as they have so far with their replies. I think that your car looks more related to a riced out Honda than a DSM and I would cringe if I ever say it on the road would then then proceed to take pics to send to my friends for a laugh. By definition any mod that attempts to make a vehicle appear faster but in fact doesn't add any form of performance gain or serve a practical use in my book is RICE.

You can do what you want with your hard earned money, but I think you are nuts if you are planning on dropping another $3k into it for looks. If I were you I would wait until F&F4 comes out, sell it to some ricer for "mad loot", and use that money plus the $3k you were going to spend on looks to pick up a real nice clean 2g awd.

When I was young (like 15-16) I liked flashy riced out cars but it didnt take long for me grow out of that. If I can help another DSMr from going down that path I will give it my best effort. But like I said it is your car and your money so do whatever will truly make you happy.

Just this time, I just want them to check all the fluids and make sure its still running ok.

I've changed the oil several times.

I just wish I had a paint booth. :)
I was trying to say that you could spend the money buying the materials you need so you could be the one to self diagnose whether or not your car's fluids were ok, and car running fine.

Well its stuck like this until I do anything because I don't have the stock bumpers and its most likely not the stock color. I have considered selling it but I probably wouldn't get another one. I asked for "constructive criticism" which means I want your opinions on what to do and if I'm heading in the right direction with it. If I could start over I definately would, I've thought about it, but the condition its in, I just won't get anything for it. Its all ran through my head but its just not plausible to me.

The way I see it when I'm done is that it has front and rear bumper that are different, but the rest will look fine. Remember, no more wing and painted hood to match. It will get lowered some and I'll probably get some 5 spoke rims. I'm wanting to go with a metallic red, something a couple shades darker than it currently is. It should turn out really nice. But I know you guys are always going to have the opinions you have now and whatever I do, its not going to change your opinion.

I provided a little different feedback for you, not just totally geared towards what you "should" do to your car in my opinion. I would try to make sure your car mechanically checks out in most areas before going towards looks. If your car checks out then you get the green flag.

Do what you want to the outside of the car that makes you happy. Just think...if you had bought a turbo eclipse, how rediculously fast your car would be, hell...maybe even reliable.

Oh I want a GSX or GS-T... but my insurance would probably sky-rocket. I've been looking for a black one but just can't really find anything around here. My ultimate goal was to go black and black everything out with black 18"s.

My previous comment was made while you posted and was toward Jp90Talon, nothing bad.
