Could you get a Lock-Up TC on 1g turbo car?

I know turbo 1g's have no lock-up TC's while n/t's do. Could you re-wire a turbo car so TC locks up -or- can you get a different TC installed? Would there be a downside of doing that? Just wondering.

No 1g's have lock-up turbo or non-turbo. As mentioned only 2g cars have lockup TC's and you would then have to wire in a 2g tcu since a 1g tcu wouldn't know what to do with the extra solenoid.

No 1g's have lock-up turbo or non-turbo.

1g 2.0 n/t's do have lock up.

Since it appears they use the same gearing on 2.0 n't's + 1g turbo FWD a/t's (owned both) these must be the same basic transmissions but can anyone tell me what the difference is between them besides lock-up mode and valve body settings?

What are the benefits of a lock-up torque converter over a non-lockup anyway? Better gas mileage? Better shifts? Never really understood what all the fuss is about.

Lower rpms when cruising in top gear over 50 mph means approx 3 mpg more and less engine wear. Non-lock up means good engine braking at over 50 mph for better car control.

If I had lock-up in a 1g turbo I would think about installing a switch like some 2g people do to keep it out of lock-up mode when desired like for <cough> spirited driving and then using lock-up for regular highway use for better mileage.

There is no 1g with a lock up converter unless it has a 2g tranny. That is all there is to it. Where are you getting your info from? Got pics of this lock up converter?

Well my 92 gs definately has a lock-up mode so if it didn't come from the factory that way then the previous owner must of changed it. I got gears 1,2,3,4 + when in 4th gear and cruising at 50 mph or higher the rpms drop approx another 400 when it goes into lock-up mode. And yes I'm familar with what locK-up TC's do and am familar with a/t cars because I've been driving for over 20 yrs now and have literally driven 100's of different cars while working for a couple rental car companies.

Then I am shocked mine has one and since I bought the car with 145,000 mi on it maybe somebody put a 2g tranny in there or something. The gearing does seem to be the same as my 1g tsi was minus that lock-up mode.

You do not have a lockup, I promise you. The gearing is not the same either. You are imagining things, its not a direct swap for a 2g auto into a 1g auto and requires rewiring, different TCU ect.

You WANT there to be a lockup so you think there is one...

Take a look at the excerpts right out of the factory service manual. 1g vs 2g...

I'm not sure where you got those charts from, but they are incorrect. According to the charts, they ALL have the converter lock-up clutch.

The F4A33/W4A33 in the turbo 1G DSMs did not have a lock-up. The F4A22 in the NT however, DID. The parts are not transferable to the 4A33 trans.
