Ok, i have been reading posts and other information on this for a month now and can not decide what to do. I want to keep my car a complete daily driver. My goals are 11.9's now but may look to go lower 11's later.
I know that on a completely stock bottem end i can go 11's but dont care for the strenth of the 1G pistons. As far as the combo 2G pistons 1G rods, the cost of that is putting it close to forged parts.
I am thinking of the ROSS street pistons on eagle rods. They can handle all the power that ill ever make and more but will they be completely streetable (from what i have read but are they??). I dont want to have to deal with clap and other side affects of the forged pistons. So my question is what pistons (forged) do you all have that you run in daily driven cars. Otherwise I may go stock but would like to be able to put down 400+ safely.
Any input would be great
thanks
Jon

I run JE forged pistons on shotpeened 1G rods. The 1G pistons are extremely weak and I don't trust them for any serious duty(more than 15psi w/ any turbo). Also I have had friends break ring landings on the Ross street pistons under high boost. If you want to push the pump gas threshold I would get a set of 8:1 comp pistons. Although if you don't mind daily driving on 15psi or less and buying race gas when you get serious(over 15psi) go for a set of 9:1 comp pistons. If you want 450whp or less I would stick with 1G rods and spend your money elsewhere, just be sure to get top quality pistons and a good machinist.

The pistons are extremely weak? That's news to me. The only weak pistons in the DSM engine lineup is the NT pistons, which lately are starting to prove themselves in a few NT to turbo conversions. 25 psi is attainable with race gas. The stock turbo 6 bolt bottom end can handle 450+ WHP with proper tuning.

people have goen 10's on those weak pistons...

I have made serious power with a stock 6 bolt rotating assembly, but I always collapsed ring landings. Never had a problem with forged JEs doing that and I have ran 23psi w/ 60 trim hybrid on pump gas(8:1 comp). Three passes with stock pistons under those conditions broke/cracked the ring landings on all four pistons. I am however sure everyone will agree that the pistons are the weakest part of the 4G63 rotating assembly. So IMO I would atleast replace the weakest link if I am building a fresh motor.

I will agree that they are the weakest part (unless you count the 2G crank. Kiss my ass Mitsubishi). For the average DSM builder though they're more than adaquate. 23 PSI on pump is pushing it though with just pump on the stock pistons. Without expert tuning, practically zero knock, and maybe WI it's hard to reliably run that high on plain jane pump gas.

Any opinions on which piston is stronger, stock 1G or 2G? I know the 2G is prefered because of the higher compression ratio, but is there any difference in strength?

The stock 2G pistons are stronger. I just dont know if I want to go through the machine work and costs to make that all work when forged stuff is not all that much more.
yes, from what I understand the stock 2G pistons are stronger...how much stronger than the 1G 7.8's I have no idea, but probably not *that* much. Plenty of people make all the horsepower they want on a completely stock bottom end. "All that machine work" you are talking about to match the 6-bolt rods to the 2G pistons would be about $100, plus the cost of the pistons (about $200). Forged stuff is hardly "not that much more." The pistons will run you $400-500, the rods about the same. Then there is the issue of streetability...stock mitsu stuff will last a long time if you take care of it (100K+). Forged stuff, not quite.

This isnt the first time ive heard that said abotu a forged motor. Can anyoen elaborate on that with a site or personal story or something? I'm not disagreeing with what you said jus lookin for proof of some kind.

Honestly thats just what ive heard from other people. Ive read stories on here of people having a mess with the forged pistons if the machine work is not dead on, since the expansion rates of the forged metal is different from the stock cast stuff. The harder metal is also hell on the cylinder walls, which breaks everything down quicker. id just do a search and youll find plenty of info.
