First off, let me say that I think this product is awesome. For any of you who are interestes in finding out more about it, read this www.dsmlink.com (for this review, I will assume you have read the website and so have some knowledge of what this product is and what it does). Also, I apologize for spelling errors and bad grammar, I am in a hurry.
This thing obviously does a lot (you read the website right?
). Most of these functions were not available on a 2g for under $900, until now. As the creators claim, it is very easy to use. It is also the first datalogging product that gives 2g's a reliable way to tell when you are getting knock. This thing will log nearly anything you would ever want know. If you want to see a complete list, go to downloads on the web site and go to the end of the user manual, they provide a complete list of all values that can be logged.
With this thing, you select the values that you want logged in advance, then just press a buttin to start the log. After you are done logging, you can look at the log at your leisure. You can pick which of the values from the log you want displayed on the graph, look at them, them pick new variables and look at them. You do not have to be connected to the car to look at the logs! If you want, you can also export the logged data to an excel spreadsheet, and look at the data that way.
Now don't forget that this thing is also a tuning tool. It gives you control over your fuel, timing, launch RPM, Idle, and REV limiter. Unlike a TMO chip though, you can re-program any of these values any time you want with the laptop. I haven't had a lot of time to really tune my car out well with it yet, but I must say I am very impressed so far. After making some changes, you can log a couple of runs, and decide what else you need to do.
This thing is awesome, but there are some problems. First, it requires a laptop. You can usually get a used one pretty cheap though, but that adds to the cost. It also requires that you have a 2g EPROM ECU. Those are not easy to come by, but check local junkyards, sometimes you can get a really good deal. They also tell you on the website how to check for an EPROM. That can add an extra $150-$200 to the price also though. Even if you have to buy a laptop and a new ECU, the cost of DSMlink is still less than EFI systems PMS, and in my opinion, this is a better product. It is also far superior to buying all of the seperate tuning tools that you would need to gain the same control over the car (AFC, ITC, TMO EPROM, Datalogging tool).
Am I happy? Yes
Do I reccommed the product? Yes
Sorry this got so long!
