I am just copying and pasting the post I put on the Digest on 03/06/01 below. Hoping to reach people on this board that don't get the Digest.

I been trying to follow the progress of Mike, who a few weeks ago posted about doing this mod. The problems he seems to have encountered is that the 2G AWD front halfshafts will not fit in the FWD differential because the splines are different. 25 tooth vs 27 tooth. Also the diameter is different so you can't just swap in spider gears from an AWD.

Mike @ RRE (not the guy doing the install) suggested swapping in and AWD front diff (like a Quaife) along with the AWD front halfshaft. That would work but he warned about easily breaking those halfshafts since they are not as strong as the FWD variety. Remember, in AWD application they were designed for half the power. In FWD application its getting all the power.

A solution could be to have custom built AWD style front equal length halfshaft that would fit in the FWD (splines & diameter). I contacted Raxles about this but they apparently have no interest. Can anyone suggest a vendor or manufacturer capable of doing this?

No, trying to convert the front halfshaft to the one found on the AWD. The FWD halfshaft is unequal length. This helps cause torque steer and gives you less traction. The passenger side wheel is always the one slipping because the axle is shorter on that side and more power ends up there.

I also asked mike@rre about this, basically you need ALL the AWD stuff ... it will cost alot of $$. I decided to forget about it.

however I have asked people who have quaife LSD on a 2G the torque steer is not bad, actually less than stock, if anything.

Are you trying to convert to ELHS and use the AWD LSD or you just want ELHS so you get better traction without LSD?

Trying to convert to ELHS with the AWD LSD. This seems to be the only way as the AWD halfshaft will not fit with a FWD differential (stock or otherwise). But, using a stock halfshaft from an AWD may not be good as it would be likely to break. Refer to my original post.

Equal length Halfshafts

I would like to know why you can't have an equal length FWD axle built to the AWD specs. Seems to me a shop could take the existing halfshaft and modify it( cut out or add sections as applicable) to the applicable AWD shaft specs. That would leave you with your 25 tooth end for the tranny. Driveline shops do this all the time for 4WD off roaders who modify their drivetrains to fit along with their suspension and other setups. Seems to me that a shop specializing in driveshafts would have no problem accomplishing this for you. If this is the only real obstacle then it should be no problem finding a shop that can do this.
