I just bought a 93 Eagle Talon DL with the 1.8. My first DSM. Now i do understand this motor is under 100 horses straight from the factory. It supposedly has 42k and the body shows it. The interior is pretty good too except i had to replace the dimmer switch because of no dash lights and the blower speed switch that was blowing fuses. And the person who had it before did a very garbage radio wiring install and broke many screw mounting points. But the guy installed black leather seats from an obviously much higher model and left the gray rear cloth.

From take off im slow enough old people would get impatient and when i hit a hill i have to downshift a couple gears. Taking off on a steep hill is almost impossible. Now im used to slow cars I used to drive a 04 kia spectra. I had the clutch and flywheel done and when the guy took it for the test ride he said its retardedly slow. I say well it had 93 horses from the factory and he says hes driven a lot of the 1.8's and theres definitely something wrong with mine. They say it could either be the timing or a clogged cat. Before even going to the shop i replaced the plugs and wires. It does idle a bit rough so that it shakes the whole car but once im moving its not too bad. And when its been sitting thru a day at work i start it and it will rev itself to 2k and back down to about 700 and then back up to 2k maybe 2 or 3 times. I would imagine more if it were winter. I hacked up the air box and by hacked up i really mean i removed the whole thing and tilted the pipe up at the intake so the filter wasnt touching anything. The filter is hanging on by the three clips that normally hold the box. Yeah i know its a mickey mouse job but i had to do something and it helped a little bit. And ill be getting a real intake soon.

Sorry for the rambling.
Oh and i was also surprised to learn even my DL with no power anything and no ac (not broken ac, just never had it to begin with) has 4 wheel disc brakes. Is 4 wheel discs standard on all dsm's?

Damn that sounds really bad, even my 1.8 is faster that And I can climb a pretty damn steep hill, as well as take off pretty fast considering it is a 1.8. Even the Honda's see me launch and think I can go fast because I can launch fast. Then again I have an unsprung clutch.

And a 93 Talon 1.8 would come stock with discs, yes. Even the RS Eclipse or low end Talon, 1.8L

Well thats great to know about the brakes. Ive never worked on drums before but have seen it done and know its a pita.
When accelerating in any gear i also notice its not a smooth acceleration. Like it should be a smooth curve of acceleration but its a bit choppy. Like a normal one if drawn on paper would be a smooth line while mine would be a choppy line. WOW way to explain it twice. Also my girl was driving behind me and said the car smells. A car with 42k on it shouldn't run like this.
Ive been searching this forum and many others without finding a real answer.
I figured out the dimmer and heater switch on my own. After buying a resistor from the junkyard for $20 but because i had been to them once a couple days before and twice for the heater problem i got the switch for free. Sometimes its over explained when its just something simple. Im hoping this issue is the same.

Sorry 4g64fiero, forgot about the edit as the other forum I am on doesn't have one.

maybe you have a clogged up fuel system and aren't getting enought fuel. try changing the fuel filter if u havent done it already. i would say try one of them fuel cleaning additives too but those may foul your spark plugs so they arent really recomended to use all the time

It sounds like the classic symptoms of a clogged catalytic converter to me. When a catalytic converter gets clogged it often causes a foul odor, poor idle and performance. I would pull the down pipe loose and take the car for a quick drive.

exactly what i was thinking of doing. Just havent had the time owning the car for a little over a week, diagnosing and fixing the other problems, and moving. Now if it is a clogged cat should i hollow it, buy a high flow, or buy a fake cat with a straight pipe thru the middle? Im pretty sure i dont have to pass emissions but i have to pass visual.
