fix on the car

Good morning all!

Alright, I'll make this short. I bought a 97 Talon and want to make sure I can drive it for many years to come.

To that end - I need to know what to fix on the car, and if an engine rebuild is suggested. If I'm going to partially tear down the engine for gaskets, seals, pumps and belts, I might as well do the whole darn thing.

Current issues:
1. 220,000KM on engine and car. Has seen hard use and some mods from previous owner.

2. Clutch acts weird. Will not go into any gear half the time, unless you rev match it and shove it in with grinding (only discovered this when testing car). What do I need to fix? Upgrade?

3. Engine is making a tapping noise. Suspect valve lifters, but worst could be bearings.

4. Light Blue smoke, oil smells gassier than a night after eating Cheetos. Piston Rings?

5. I want the most cost effective (not CHEAP, but EFFICIENT) way to go about these repairs... I have a great mechanic buddy who builds race engines who has agreed to help me for 60-80 and hour. He will do my labour. He has all the tools, the skills and the space. I have old hands that don't like holding things steady anymore.
Speed Test
That in consideration, my budget is 5-10K.

A parts list for upgraded parts, with part makes, models and numbers is greatly appreciated!!! (I would be happy with close to stock but more durable parts), I want to bulletproof this thing. The most I'll be doing is dropping it into 3rd and merging/passing on the highway or a couple track days a year.

May not be a clutch issue, just an old transmission issue. I would bleed the clutch first and make sure the engagement point is correct. Not a bad idea to put fresh gear oil in it and see if it improved. www.vfaq.com

There is quite a big difference between valve tapping and rod knock noise. Do you have a video?

It could be worn valve stem seals or worn valve guides. When does it smoke? All the time? During idle? During startup? At WOT?

You can do a basic rebuild. Most of the stock OEM parts are not available anymore. I would stick to DSM vendors such as www.jnztuning.com or extremepsi.com I also would trust some of our DSM freelancers over your basic neighborhood mechanic as they have more experience in our cars. I suggest joining some of the FB DSM pages such as DSM Nation, DSMTuners etc where most of these people are.

At 220k km with smoke, tapping, and clutch issues, a rebuild is smart. Do a full engine teardown—rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, timing belt, water/oil pump, upgraded lifters. For clutch, replace with an OEM+ or stage 1 kit. Budget 5–10k is solid with your mechanic friend. Focus on OEM or proven brands (OEM Mitsubishi, ACL bearings, Gates kit, Exedy clutch). That’ll give you a durable, near-stock but reliable setup for years.
