has anyone used the new hks s-afr and if so, how is it working? i've heard it's a little simpler to use compared to the apexi safc, plus it has a program to allow BOV venting outside, which i want, purely for the sound!

any advantages/disadvantages to either?

The safr has a "learn" function, when you first install it you flip the dipswitch and the safr reads the ecu and adjusts it self to mimic the ecu's fuel trims. Then you disable the dipswitch, the safr is giving the ecu the same fuel trims that you had before, now you can tune. With the safc your gonna have to start from scratch.

so i can basically install the safr and then drive, and tune it over time. i'd hate to install it then have my car run like crap until i finally get everything tuned; like it seems would happen with the safc.

I had no idea about the "learn" function on the unit...that is one smart idea. Your car will run at least as good as it was before the install, brillant!

I posted a question about this a while back. I'm still shopping for a fuel computer. I like the learn function. No one posted that in my earlier replies. Anything else interesting that might help me make up my mind?

isnt the s-afc in a neutral stage when u set it to 0% across the board? like its not installed? maybe the learn funtion isnt necesary at all! but i could be wrong, correct me if so, i'm in the market for a fuel computer too, so i'm interested

S-AFR

i've had an S-AFR in my car for a couple months now and i'm not sure the learning function really does much. the EIDS does seem to have kept my idle in check since the install of the cams but it doesn't do what it is supposed to.....when the BOV vents at high RPM and the clutch is depressed the car still dies. i would imagine its "learning" mode and EIDS function would recognize this irregularity quickly and address it.........it has not.....so how worthy is this learning mode. when my FP Green and 660's show up i'm going back to an AFC

Would an AFC with my mods listed below be of any use? I have stock injectors and stock 14b and I heard that it probably wouldn't help me at all. Would it give me better gas mileage possibly(I went from 20 down to 15-16 when I added my fuel pump)? How about performance benefits?

i doubt it would affect your MPG at all really....you dropped your MPG because you now have more fuel pressure, the AFC is only going to allow you to add/cut air as needed. while you will be able to lean out somewhat, it wont be enough to affect mileage. if you are still on stock injectors AND turbo, a larger fuel pump will actually slow your car down! get a fuel pressure regulator and cut the fuel pressure back a bit and see if that helps your MPG, then when you get larger INj and turbo crank it back kup.

Actually, my fuel pump was probably the best mod I've done to my car, I went from running 14.2 to 13.4 with the pump. If you check Buschur's website, they recommend fuel pump well before getting a new turbo or injectors.

I have no personal experience with the safr and a medium amount with the safc. The safc is set at 0, just stock fuel maps when you install it. It's very easy to use and it obviously works since at least 3/4 of the dsms out there run it and get good times. Now as for the SAFR I know one person that has used it. Lowell Foo, he tunes professionally. He has used just about every engine management system out there <he runs a motec M48pro on his 1G AWD, flat twelves on pump gas with a frank 3!?>. He absolutely HATED the SAFR. I can't remember his exact reasoning, this was about 7 months ago, but in a nutshell it just wouldn't do what he wanted it too.

fuel pressure regulators: yes the sx, paxton, aeromotive, and aem will all allow you to run whatever you want. There is a vfaq on the install. DO NOT get a sx or paxton, they both fall apart over time. The aeromotive is what most people are heading towards now...

if anyone can give me some reasons to not use the safr, let me know! obviously the safc works quite well, since it is used not only on dsm's but the honda cars as well and everyone seems to like it. the reason i am leaning towards the safr is the size and i'd kind of like to keep all my electornics the same brand for some kind of unity on the interior.

I have the SAFC and I like it, if you set the afc to 0 it will do nothing to the fuel curve it just taks some looking at your gauges to set the curve. I vented my BOV and all I hade to do was crush the BOV and turn the idle screw(BISS)up until the car idles. I also installed a Walbro 255lph hp pump and lost MPG BECAUSE I did not purchase a FPR and gauge. To run more boost on the 1st gens you want to turn the fuel pressure at idle to 43psi instead of 36 or what ever it is stock. I hav eht egauge now and its at 40 with just the pump installed the problem is the stock regulator can not flow what the pump puts out so your computer has truble keeping a steady air fuel mix. Also driving habits and Mo Boost only decrese MPG not increase it. I dont know anything about the HKS fuel controller though I will have to look into it.

mods
K&N
costum LSE intake
LSE strut bars
JUN 9lb flywheel
ACT2100 (wish I got the 2600/2900)
LSE MBC set at 15
removed CAT
Apex SAFC
phantom air/fuel and Boost gauge
205 55 ZR15 potenza RE730 (I still burn out till 60-70) I would not suggest those tires.
