I'm looking at a few cars to buy and I was wondering if there was a way to determine whether the car has a 4 bolt or 3 bolt while everything is on the car? I'd like to know easily if the guy is blowing smoke who says he's done a 4 bolt swap.

not behind the rear wheels....just look at the rear diff.....if there 4 bolts holding the axles in a square pattern its a 4 bolt....if theres 3 in a triangle pattern its a 3 bolt
No, you can't just look at the Diff. Here's a pic from Vfaq. It's much easier to look behind the wheel or even just feel for the 4 bolts than it would be to look at that while its underneath the car.
