Is a 60 trim Garret overkill?

I have seen a 60 trim Mutt for sale and I am curious if a 60 trim is a good choice for my car. I currently have Spearco FMIC, 3" o2 elminator/downpipe with 3" cat back, 550cc injectors, SAFC, Web Cams street grind, Hacked MAF, and of course a datalogger on my 90 Tsi AWD. I guess my main question is would I be on the verge of compressor surge if Im not running enough boost. I know several people who are running 57 trim T3/T4 on their DSM's with no problems around 24-26 psi. Do you all think I have enough mods to hold this type of turbo? Not really concerned with lag, just want alot of power.

Thanks

Not sure about the surge limit but I have heard of people putting those on DSM's. Probably nothing you couldn't do with a 50 trim as you would need to do alot to use that turbo the way it was meant to.

this is what Extreme turbo has to say about it...

If you're not a hard core track person or HP junkie, you are looking at the wrong turbo! Your list of mods needs to be fairly long to run this turbo in a decent fashion. It's definitely not for the average daily driver. You will definitely want head work, cams, stronger bottom end, etc. to run this turbo. Just take a look at Ross' car (which has this turbo on it) to see what was done. Albeit a little over kill for this turbo, it's definitely in the range of what you should have in mind to take full advantage of this setup.

Able to crank out in the neighborhood of 500HP at the wheels and put an AWD solidly in the bottom 11s (10s possible depending on weight), this is not for the person who is lacking mods in any way, shape, or form, or is afraid to tune, or break driveline parts. If you're still here, this might be what you're looking for.

With the proper mods and tuning, not only is this turbo able to make some serious HP, it's also much more streetable than you'd think. Ross' Talon is currently seeing 30psi at 4500RPM from a 3000RPM roll in 2nd gear. On 4500RPM stutter launches, it's nearly impossible to shift into 2nd before 8000RPM it spools so fast...or it least that's the way it was the three launches we tried before the axle snapped :)

This turbo is definitely targeting some who can either live with a pretty modded-to-race daily driver or has a second car.

I believe it's an overkill foa a daily driver, if you just want the car for racing I think it'll be a great turbo, but your car won't be very reliable..

Leftyasittin: Yes a 60trim is a bit overkill that is about the size of my Br-57. If you want it too spool well you will need higher compression pistons when you rebuild your motor. I personally don’t think 7:8:1 will cut it I would look for either the 95 pistons (8:5:1) or the evos (8:7:1 and better valve reliefs). Please do not think the turbo will be the end of the equation you will QUICKLY see how weak everything else in your drivetrain is. You should also consider what you are going to do for fuel control. Currently I am using a S-AFC but that is hardly ideal. You will need bigger injectors than 550s I would suggest 660s. Also keep in mind that any large turbo car will make SIGNIFGANTLY more power on c-16 than pump gas. Also real turbos need external wastegates if you get a properly sized wastegates you should not have problems controlling boost as long as your are running a boost level above the spring rate of the wastegate.

Most importantly if you are really serious about making power stay away from the DSM Performance crap. It just no good their biggest supporters have nothing to back up their claims. The turbos have been out for a while now and still no big numbers there is no excuse. Get a green from FP or if you want to go with a t3/t4 style and save a few bucks get a green equivalent. At that point you know that if you are not making power it’s a fault in tuning not in the turbo. I think it will be better quality and make more power than anything that can come out of that particular Florida shop anyway.

No, it hasn't. I was trying to avoid another mutt bashing session.
Very good idea. :D
