I thought I had read once that the gear ratio's were different in the J-spec trannys. Is this true or are they the same as the US trannys?

Just wondering because Im considering buying a J-spec engine which I know is the same (except for the intake) but it also comes with a tranny and I need to know if I can use the tranny.

Thanks

oh yeah, this isn't for my 98 Eclipse either, it's for a 1G. Just thought I should mention that before someone posted it wouldn't fit right.

Check this out: JDM FWD/AWD Tranny info

While this article talks about the Switchable AWD Tranny (which I would love to get my hands in one:D ). It does talk a little bit of the different gear ratios on the JDM trannies. It also links you to another vfaq that lets you see a chart of almost (if not all) the gear ratios of the DSM trannies. Also the article tells you how to veriify what you're getting. Have fun...;)

I have a 92 AWD J-spec tranny. I got it with my motor but im staying FWD. Any buyers? no idea where to start with price. Also. I live in colorado so shipping will be a small problem. Transfer case is detached so it will be easier.

Neeedlez, how much do you want for it? i dont know where to start with the price either. im having tranny troubles and i just know its gonna be the next thing to pop.

anyone else: is a jspec tranny worth it? does it literally bolt up, or are there issues?
i can get a rebuid on my tranny for $850. any ideas?

It was on subject of this post so sorry... Throw me a price that seems fair. I just want to get rid of it. It bolts to the motor fine.. not sure how it fits under the car

just to help you guys out, my friend can get them for 600-650. so thatll give you an idea on the price.

The JDM GVR4 tranny has a longer first gear than US Spec trannies. It has the same final drive and same 2-5th gear ratios as a US Spec. Also all the JDM GVR4 trannies have 22 transfer cases.

The JDM trannies we can't use are the EvoI-III trannies. They have a different final drive and completely different gearing. In order to use this tranny you would need to rebuild your rear end with the matching rear diff or else you will blow out your VC fairly quickly.

So basically if I get an engine and a tranny and the tranny doesn't work, I should be happy because I got and EVO motor :)
The only way you will tell if it 'doesn't work' is when you fry your VC and that could potentially cost you more than how much you bought the engine and tranny for in the first place. It will bolt in. Just make sure you know what engine you are getting and that will tell you what tranny you are getting.

Why don't you rebuild the engine and tranny you have - as opposed to replacing the worn engine and tranny combo by another worn engine and tranny combo? There's most likely a reason why the engine and tranny ended up at the junkyard in the first place - since no one replaces "a low miles - 30K - engine in perfect shape" for no reason. Some of the JDM engines have been sitting and rusting at the junkyards even five years and/or are toren to shit. You'll end up paying for what you already have + the red valve cover. Just something to be considered.

from my understanding, Japan has strict regulations and you are required to have your motor replaced or rebuilt after so many thousends of miles.

Don't know if thats true or not but I've heard that from a few different sources.

That would explain why so many ended up in junk yards with 30-40k on them.

A friend of mine - a pro Mitsu mechanic - has taken one of the JDM engines recently apart and said the engine was all worn to hell - especially the main and rod bearings. I've been just wondering why people actually buy the JDM engines - when they can rebuild (and even upgrade the internals of) their exisiting engines for the same (or even less) money. I mean, a 30K engine is a 30K engine, why not just investing the money toward a freshly rebuild block and knowing exactly where you stand and what you're getting? Not trying to start some flame war ;) , just wondering why someone would rather buy 3 days old bread for the price of freshly baked one.. Peace. :D

Personally I have had 3 bad expereinces with mechanics trying to rebuild a 4G63. All three times they blew up within 300 miles or less. I guess that is why I would rather just buy one completely assembled with low miles and throw a timing belt on it.

I agree with you though. I think it would be cheaper to just rebuild the one you have.

Next week i'll try rebuilding one myself

Didn't realize they were worth so much. I'll sell for 350 if anyone is interested than. And i'll take this to the trader now so people dont get upset at me posting here.

ok so I just thought of something.

This guy swears up and down that he has an evolution engine in his car. From what I understand, you can't bolt the EVO engines up to a 1G because of the front motor mounts. Correct?

I figured at first he was confused and had a Galant engine or something, except he has the whole front clip of the Evolution sitting in his garage.

I'm assuming that the Galants over in Japan are similar to the ones here in America so it would be kinda hard to mistake one for an evolution. I haven't seen the clip.

Anyways, what this all comes down too is that having the whole front clip he also has the tranny too. He dropped both into his car:confused:

So when you say "Fry" the VC, would it litterally get hot enough to start on fire? Because this car only made it a 1/2 mile down the road and burst in to flames. He has no idea what caused it yet.
