Line from oil filter housing - where does it go?

Hey all, I am in the process of trying to bring my 91 to life. Should be ready to crank over this week I hope. Quick question. The line that comes off the oil filter housing, where does it go? I was pretty sure there is a hard line that goes across the block to the thermostat housing, but I am not sure. I do see a hard line about 24 inches with a few bends in a box of parts that I was given with the car. If you were staring at the front of the engine, and looked at the thermostat housing, where would it connect to?

I think in order for me to put this hard line on, I need to take off the exhaust mani and mount it? Am I wrong on this whole idea?

Thanks
Tim

i think on a 91, the only lines comming off the oil filter housing are the lines going to the oil cooler. if not, then they are coolant lines that come from the big water pipe that is under your exhauset mani. behind ur turbo.

there are two lines that go to the filter housing/oil cooler. There is one that comes in form the top that comes from the really big hard line that runs across the face of the block, then there is the one that comes out of the bottom of the cooler....this one has like 2 90 degree bends and a 45 degree or somethin....it runs into one of the two ports on the thermostat housing. The other port should feed the coolant to the turbo.

I am pretty sure that is the one... but I think in order to get it mounted, I need to drop the exhaust manifold. Thanks for the help!

i was able to snake it through between the turbo and the block. There is a bracket that is bolted to the block, behind the turbine housing that must be removed....actually, your bracket may be conected to the hose...

There is no bracket on the line that I have. I am pretty sure it is the right line. One one end there are 2 bolt holes, and one on the other. I imagine that the one side with only one bolt goes on the oil filter side?

the only coolant lines that inknow of that thread on are the one that goes to the turbo on the front side, and the one that comes down from the LArge hard line on the face of the block.....the one that is long should be slip fit on both ends......it should have rolled edges.

Okay I took the pic of the line... is this the line that needs to go from the oil filter housing to the thermostat housing? On the right side, that is a bolt hole, not another fitting.

I hope this is it, if not I am going to have to run a plain rubber line till I can buy one.

yep, that is the lower line from the oil cooler.......the end that has two brackets on it goes to the oil cooler....the other end lays across the face of the block behind the turbo and connects to the thermostat housing....there are two ports that come out below the primary inlet....connect it to the housing with 3/8 soft line.....

Thanks I was able to get it snaked up. I now see where it bolts near the thermostat housing, and one bolt right by the oil pan. Out of the blue, do you happen to know what size bolts those are? I have a whole bag of bolts that came with the car, and I cant find either of them to mount top or bottom.

Thanks again

as far as i know 2 of them are 10mm head bolts and 1 is a 12mm or all three are 10mm head.....just see what fits as far as the bolt holes....but like i said they should be 10mm head bolts...

Yea I have a ton of 10mm head bolts, but it seems the one bolt that goes by the thermostat is smaller (thread wise) and the one that bolts by the oil pan is a thicker bolt... Maybe I'll just swing by and see my local satan mech today to see if he knows.

I appreciate all your help eviltalon

I got both of them installed. The line fits now and ended each piece with rubber.

Got everything hooked up, took out the MPI fuse and spark plugs, was going to give it a crank to see if she would turn over, and DOH the stupid battery won't hold a charge!

Since I gotta goto autozone to get new rotors anyways, guess I may as well add a new battery to the list.

Yea I am in the same boat. I'm pretty sure it's the battery.. it has juice, but I Don't think it's enough to turn over. The lights turn on, but all I get is a "click" when I turn the key... just like you have when the battery is dead. What kind of battery you getting?

#21 ·
i got an optima red top......best battery ever....well at least in my opinion.....has like twice the power, so even on really cold mornings, it will still start with out a prob. I also have one in my 240. They are kind of expensive though. I paid about $110 for mine, but you can mount it anywhere and in any position and is also vibration resistant and spill proof. Good stuff.

also, if that doesnt work....if you did any fuel pump work.....check the positive and ground conections at the pump....after i put my new battery in and then it died.....turns out that i halfass krimped the positive line between the tank lid and the tank.....just a suggestion

Man are we on the same page..... this is just too strange! Got a different battery, turned out I missed a ground and that's why it wouldnt fire. So we got it to turn over a few times, and it was turning fine. Plugged the MPI fuse back in, turned it over for a few more cycles, and no fuel being sprayed. Soo we take the MPI relay out from behind the radio, give it some juice, and hear it click. Plug it back in, go check the fuel pump. Opened the cover, turned the key, and can't hear anything. No power? So there is a broken ground wire, connect that to another ground, and still get no juice to the pump. The sending unit and that line is TOTALLY rusted. So I need to find another sending unit, and my buddy is giving me a brand new walboro 255 that he ordered for his 91.

Will I be okay running that 255 (when I get around to putting it in) on stock everything else?

Oh, btw, does anyone know where I can get another fuel sending unit? - I don't really want to goto the local Mitsu dealer cuz I know I'll spend a ton probably. How much do they usually cost?

cheapest would be a junk yard or a U-pull it. You may want to get an Adjustable fuel pressure regulator......other wise you may run rich....or at least get an air fuel ratio gauge and a boost controller to compensate for the added amount of fuel....

There will be boost to compensate... :)
