Looking to buy a $400 '93 Talon DL (Should I?)

Hi all.

In the days of insane gas prices, my wife and I are in the market for a cheaper, good on gas car to use as a DD in town. We're a Jeep 4wheeling couple, and our Dodge Ram (tow rig) seems to only get about 10mpg. So, we're looking at something to get at least twice that.

We came across a '93 Eagle talon DL (1.8L w/ automatic) at a local pawn shop, with a $599 tag on the windshield. The thing has seen better days. Mileage-wise, it has 145K on the clock. Outside, the nose has apparently kissed something before. The fiberglass has some blemishes, but is pretty much intact. The front few inches of hood has some small dents and rust. The windshield has a spiderweb on the passenger side (looks like a fist or something small made it). The entire body would need some polishing up. No wheel covers. The driver's mirror is busted (while parked there)

Now, the inside looks pretty good... would just need a good scrubbing. No stereo, but everything else looks to be in decent shape.

Now the mechanical side...

The pawn shop guy says someone had once put a down payment, but backed out. He said he would start it up for us, but the rear main had went, and the thing would spray oil on the ground if started. (There's 'kitty litter' under the car right now from the last time). Hence, the price drop to $400. But, he says other than that, the car ran great.

I've done some searching here, and since I'm a mechanic (USAF), the rear main seal job doesn't scare me (Even on a FWD car). Now, the decision. If they can verify that the car runs fine (fill it up with oil, and start it with a pan underneath to catch it on the other end) then for $400, we'd definately consider picking it up. Unless someone here thinks otherwise based on the year/model and engine of this particular DSM. Like I said, this vehicle would be bought to only act as a daily driver in town only. Not sure of the overall maintenance history of these cars, but we wouldn't want a money pit. I'd work my detailing magic and clean it up. Then of course a good tune up after the main seal job. Then, I'd want to just have to fill it up with gas a go. I'm good on preventive maintenance, and would go synthetic to help prolong the life. No plans to 'rice' it out, turn it into a show car or anything. Just need to know if this beater could make a good local commute ride. Of course, if it treated us good, we'd gradually add on nice things in the future.

Opinions/comments? Anything common problem-wise that I can check before buying? Thanks.

It would double your gas milage. I would look through the paper for one that is ready to go. You can find one for just alittle more that doesn't need anything major. I bought one a couple years back for $450 ready to go. It wasn't in awsome shape but it did great till I found the one I am driving now.

If it was me I wouldn't, not knowing there is a main seal leaking. If it was holding all of its fluids then yea but not like it sits.

$400 '93 Talon DL (Bought it)

Well, as crazy as some may think, we took the plunge and picked up the Talon. Most out there would probably have pasted on buying a car that they couldn't drive home, but not us. We topped off the oil and ran it for a little bit to make sure there wasn't anything else wrong. The place didn't see the hurt in a little more oil on the ground, since there already was some. Once we knew it was otherwise mechanically sound, we bought it, and called for a two truck to get her home. Not the normal way to bring home a newly purchased vehicle.

Picked up the rear main seal kit, and other gaskets and belts. Gave it a good bath, and pushed it into the back of the garage, to begin the major work.

Guess it's time to do an intro since I know I'll be staying around. I'm a vehicle mechanic for the USAF. Been in for 16 years. Originally from North Carolina (Go Heels!). Just came down from Alaska. Currently in Cheyenne Wyoming. The wife and I have lifted Jeeps and love to 4wheel. I'm a metal-head, and enjoy sleeping in when I get the chance.

See you all on the forum.

:D I dont think it was crazy. For $400. A rear main seal isnt that bad of a job and as long as a car is running than $400 isnt bad. I hope everything works out.

First things first. That always has been and ALWAYS will be the way you bring home a new DSM ;)

I just bought a 91 Talon N/T and i brought it home on a flatbed.

Hell, when I bought my old stock GSX I only made it halfway home before the BISS screw popped out. I hope you've got AAA, SilverstoneXJ! :) Congrats on the purchase again, I don't think $400 is high at all.. people will pay in the $200 range for just a shell.

Not bad for $400. I found a perfect running motor in a '93 GS and bought the whole car for $200. It needed a transmission, clutch, rear wheel bearings.......more like entire I-beam due to one siezed on bearing. The body is a little beat like that one there, but it runs very good and the milage is incredible. I left my F-150 4x4 parked with an empty tank for 4 days now....ahhh, what a great feeling it is not having to fill that beast up and drive 60 miles everyday.

If you have the backgraound you have, you will have a different view of what is reasonable and what isn't. I had about a hundred people telling me I was crazy for buying what I bought.

I almost towed my car home due to bad tires (too big, rubbing), but I grabbed a set of rims/tires and tossed those on, drove home with my 'plates', howling bearings, 1st,3rd and 4th gear...slipping clutch, then the alternator died and left me on a nieghbors lawn right down the street from the police station. Thankfully I was within walking distance of my truck with the jumper cables, so it didn't take long to rescue my new found friend. I was certain the police would impound a car with no stereo, power windows stuck down and bogus plates. I placed a paper in the window and wrote 'SOLD' to keep the attention away and it was on private property.....yea, I probably should have towed it!

I don't know how the 1.8s are but the 2.0 has plenty of pep, it won't win races, but who needs to when you have a 4x4 to waste your gas with!

I'm about $1,200 deep into this car and it runs better than anything I've seen around with 145k. I haven't done a thing to the motor....I tightened the p/s belt to keep it from squeeling if that counts. I did change the oil of course and it is holding it pretty well.

Thanks guys. The rear main is going in this Thursday. Hopefully it holds, and lets me run her. Had fun the past few days cleaning her up, and doing small but big improvements like painting the wheels. Now, when I look at it in the garage (from the rear) it looks like a $1200 car. Amazing what a bath and a few hours work can do.

I'm creating a CarDomain page, and will post up the URL when I can.

Well, I started up a CarDomain page for anyone who wishes to check it out and follow the progress...

Getting ready to dive into the rear main seal work shortly. Hopefully a little later, I'll be able to report a success. Still wrestling with a few electrical connections on the transaxle that I can't figure how they unplug. I hate how vehicle manufactures will all use different style plug-ins!

Okay, I'm going in... cover me.

I bought my 94 1.8 for 800 bucks and I am happy with it. When I got it it had 104k on the clock and now it has 120030...(changed the timing belt(s) this afternoon) and couldn't be happier. I am like you....the gas prices are killing me and I get 25mpg on my DSM versus the 6 to 8 on my K5 Blazer. I have a 35 mile drive to work everyday nd the car already paid for itself. I have no plans to pimp my DSM out in the least. It is only a DL (Dead Last). Besides. my Blazer's lugnuts need more torque than my damn DSM can put out!!

My 1990 tsi came home on a trailer. That was my second dsm. Bought it for $800 on ebay with a bad t-belt. Head was shot, as were 2 pistons. Had it on the road the same day. Drove it for around a year. Its in a junkyard now. RIP POS!

For $400, I think it's a good deal. Even with the rear main seal problem, if a reliable DD is what you're looking for, the 1.8L is the way to go. These things are friggin' bulletproof. I had one for years, drove it for a long time with no problems at all. Snapped a timing belt, no problem, just replaced it (the 1.8's are non-interference, no bent valves). The only reason I don't still have the car today is because I totalled it :p

just picked up a 1992 talon awd tsi for 510.00. well! more like trailered home. looks like some one floated the number 3 cylinder valves on it and hit the piston. my only goal this weekend is to get the head off and check the damage. btw! anyone have a spare head with good valves? or just spare valves?
