Loose compressor wheel nut on new turbo?

Anybody ever run into this before?

Just got done at my buddie's house where he was installing a new 50trim on our friend's 2G.

After one trip around the neighborhood the nut holding the comp. wheel in place loosened up. Luckily it didn't back off completely.

I won't say who the company was that sold him the new turbo as they haven't had the chance to fix the problem yet but I was curious as to whether anyone else has had this problem before.

Royal pain in the ass to say the least.

dang, glad you caught that!

i will say i've never even heard of it happening (I've been around DSM's for a few years). sounds like maybe they just didn't tighten it, i don't see how else it could have happened.

it sounds like a rookie mistake, but then again it's definitely something that could happen to the best of them. i am interested to hear if they clear it up for you though, if they're good they'll own right up.

was there any damage to anything?

Make sure the BOV is working right. I've ran into this before. The BOV doesnt open and puts force on the compressor wheel which in return spins the nut off. I've seem cars suck the nut through the intake and ruin motors. Just be careful!

Kinda hard for the nut to make it through the IC, one would think.

yeah that is kinda scary, ima go check my turbo when i get home to make sure its not loose, judging from the topic starters location i think i may have a turbo from the same people, if they went local that is.

Here's an update.

The nut loosening allowed the turbine wheel to back up and make contact with the turbine housing. Ouch.

Turbo is on its way back to manufacturer for inspection. They of course asked "are you sure it wasn't oil starvation" but they'll see when they look at the bearing that there will be no bearing damage due to starvation I'm sure.

I'm not thinking that the bearing freezing would cause the nut to back off anyway. I'm almost positive its a QC problem but we'll see what they say. In the meantime, no car for my buddy to drive to work.

Well, THREE WEEKS later and its time for an update!

My friend just got his replacement turbo from the manufacturer. They say there was foreign object damage to the turbine wheel.

What the hell would come loose inside the engine, get through the combustion chamber without damaging the valves, pistons etc then trash the turbine wheel? Total BS we think. It sure looked to us like the turbine wheel was damaged from contacting the housing. I also don't think FOD would have caused the nut on the comp. wheel to back off either.

A decent company would have sent out a turbo the next day too, not wait 3 damn weeks. He didn't have to pay for the replacement but now he "used up" his "no-hassle" waranty.

Yeah riiiigghtt! FOD from the turbine housing maybe, hehe.

From the "archives"...

quote >>I recently bought my latest turbo from bullseyepower.com. Check them out. There 50 trim is like $650. I went to them because they offer a bad ass warranty. A no hassle warranty for $70<<

Also...

quote >> POLICY INFORMATION WARRANTY - “NO-FAULT / NO-HASSLE” WARRANTY PROGRAM TURBLOWNETICS WILL REPAIR OR REPLACE, AT OUR EXPENSE, ANY NEW TURBLOWNETICS / SPEARCO PRODUCTS THAT FAIL, INCLUDING PRODUCTS USED IN RACING OR COMPETITION APPLICATIONS, FOR A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR FROM THE ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE. <<

;) I'll say it again for the deaf... pay attention.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner. Turbonetics it was. No offer from the dealer to give him a turbo off the shelf so he could get his car going either.

They did cover it under the warantee but of course its a one time deal even if its a QC issue which we believe this was.

My next turbo is definitely coming from FP.
