MKIV Supra SMIC install on 1G?

I just bought a MkIV Supra SMIC, which is huge, and am planning on installing it on my 90Tsi-awd. I have heard of one person doing this, but others claim the SMIC won't fit a 1g. I am aware that one endtank must be rotated, but aside from that why is it any harder to put on a 1G than a 2G?
Anyone with some insight is encouraged to comment!

OK, I am sure that someone has a bright idea. I just know I'm not the only person who wants to do this.

Well, I know BatmanGSX is doing the supra sidemount mod. However, if I remember correctly, he is going to have somebody weld custom endtanks on to it. You've probably already seen the thread on 16g-95GSX's supra SMIC. IMO, thats too much of the bumper to cut away.

This is a good idea, I hope to do it once somebody figures out how to make it fit easily and cheaply.

Yeah, I've read everythread already. As far as I know, nobody on this forum has accomplished this job on a 1G. I'm going to try to fit it on next week. I'll just see what needs to be done.

Please take a lot of pics and all. I'm really interested and would like to see how it turns out on a 1g.

I was debating whether or not to get the supra IC. But I dont feel like fitting it in there. IT seems like a massive project. I am not a big fan of cutting metal, and reinforcements. SO I have pretty much deceided on gettting a small FMIC and having custom pipes made. I know you can save a lot of money, but I dont feel like going through the agony. But if you do somehow get it in there well, please inform us, cause i may change my mind.

Yup, I'll take pics and keep everyone informed. I am going to do everything I can to make it fit, but if it dosent, I'll just put on the Isuzu NRP IC.

sweet, i cant wait to see it and hear how it went, i have a 90 and want to do it.....but i dont know if it will make the fit

What other types of SMIC could be put on our cars? Like 300ZX TT's? I don't know, but this would be a great mod if we can find one that would fit on a 1G.

#10 ·
The 300zx uses dual intercoolers and just using a single IC from the ZX wouldn't be any better than our single IC. The best option is really a front mount, if the supra IC doesen't work.

#11 ·
What about using a Supra intercooler as a front mount? I thought somebody had welded two Supra intercoolers together and used them as a FMIC. My friend with a 91 300ZX said he had heard of that beeing done, too.

I dont think that you could put the supra ICs as a FMIC, The supra IC is thick, much thicker than a normal FMIC. YOu wouldnt really be able to get it in there.

Got the Supra SMIC today. Its huge compared to the stocker. Well I took about 3 hours out and test fit the thing. I had to do some trimming where the upper intercooler pipe goes to the stock IC. I enlarged the hole a bit to accomidat the 2.5" pipe. I also roated the top endtank on the Supra SMIC. It is held down by aluminum clips. It takes about 20-30min to rotate, very easy to do.
Once I did that I test fit the IC. It was hitting the front bumper cover, so I trimmed the 1" ribbing on the bumper cover for clearance. Once that was done the SMIC fit in very well. It lines up perfect on top, below the IC does not stick down below the bumper, except for the Lower entank pipe. I test fit using stock 2.5 Supra IC pipe. It's almost a perfect fit, I just need a "S" bend for the lower IC pipe. I took about 20 pics, but it will be about a week to get them developed.
I ran out of time, so I had to put the stock SMIC back on. Anyhow this weekend I'll do the whole install.

This is really easy to do, in 3 hours I had the thing ready to be bolted in, I only needed that damn "S" bend.

Sweet good work bro, there are mixed opinions about how much I had to cut, I hoped to get you guys a pic this past weekend while I was home for all of you of the actual cut, but was unable as I ran out of time, o well maybe next time.

Word of advise though, make sure you get some nice couplings and clamps. I had a blowout this weekend on the lower IC pipe where the coupling actually came off the intercooler itself, I didn't think it would happen as that is a very tight fit so I thought but it did, and it was embarrassing as hell as you have your car put into the nearest parking lot spitting black smoke from the rich mixture the whole way. Luckily I always cary a small set of tools with me and I got her back on good as new and drove of after 1 minute or repair. The rubber couplings I have just don't work well when it comes to stayig on, I suppose they expand to much under pressure.

SWEET!!!!! I better get one quick b/c the supra guys find out and jack the $$ up....I hate being caght between payckecks! I think the Mutt 2 will mate nicley with it. :D

Thanks alot 16g-95GSX, your actually the one I got the idea from. After reading about a bunch of you 2G guys doing it, I figured it was worth the trouble to find out if It fit a 1G, Well it was worth it!. For about $50 after selling the stock SMIC, its a hell of a deal.
Thanks for the tips, I think I'm going with RRE T-bolt clamps. You can tighten the piss out of those. I'll get pics up asap.

Could you tell me everything you need to do this install? (I don't mean tools, just parts, such as Supra SMIC, clamps, hoses, pipes, etc.) Sorry if it is a pain to list everything, I just don't really know what all you need. I would like to do this mod.

Do you think it would be bad if I did this mod too early? All I have done to my car right now is a removed air can and silencer, DSE 3" intake pipe, ACT 2600, and a Fidanza flywheel (clutch and flywheel being installed right now). I would like to do this mod soon, because I have heard that you get really nice gains, but I am just wondering if it would be too soon right now. Thanks.

Well hey, give some reviews for the people here, tell them what you think about the difference between this cooler and the stocker. You are the 5th person I know to have done this and the 2nd if not the 1st to do it on the 1g, I can't remember if any of those previous 4 were 1g's. But good job, just let us all hear what you have to say about it.

It wouldn't hurt anything to have this done early on. Remember it will give you power over the stocker no matter what you have, just that the larger the turbo you go and the higher the boost the more gains you will see. I'll let 90Tsi here tell ya how to do it on a 1g as I have never tried.

Well I haven't completed the install yet so I can't say everything you need for sure. I did everything up to connecting the Lower IC pipe to the bottome endtank. I used all Supra 2.5" piping for the Lower IC pipe, I just need a small "S" bend to connect the whole thing.
Basically the install is pretty intuitve. I do a detailed instruction plan when I finish mine. Basically you flip the top endtank to move it close to the stock UIC pipe location.
Then you move the stock hole for the UIC pipe about 1" to the passengers side to line up with the top 2.5" endtank outlet. You have to cut with tin-snips on that part. I also trimmed the inside bumper cover to allow the IC to slid forward all the way so thats its flush (cant see it from the side).
Once thats done I used the Supra pipes to run to within 6" of the bottom end tank. Thats where the "S" bend comes in. The IC can be easily secured with the mounting holes on the IC- to the splash guard mounting holes.
Thats pretty much it.
I didn't know what I was doing either, very simple job. There seems to be more room than in a 2G as it isn't that tight of a fit for the SMIC.

Like I said, once it's done I'll do a review and detailed write up.
Also, this mod is fine to do early, it can only help.

Thanks a lot. I am good friends with a mechanic, so I am sure when it comes time I will be able to get a lot of help from him. I just wanted to see in advance what I was getting myself into. Thanks again, and good luck with your install!

good job 90-TSI
I just did this install on my 95 talon AWD. It hangs a little low though as I didn't want to cut above the pinch weld. I was really thinking about rotating the end tank as well. 90-TSI, did you rotate the tank with the bent outlet pipe or the one with the straight outlet pipe? And also I don't understand why an 'S' pipe is needed....I really cant picture it, my lower pipe matched up perfectly with my lower IC hose.

Oh, also, when you bent those aluminum fins back to rotate the tank, was there anything there to give it an 'airtight' seal? I was nervous about rotating it myself

I guess the 1G and 2G's are pretty different. My lower hose was pretty close, but I didn't want to use the 1-7/8" stock hose. Basically the bottom endtank outlet points at a 45 degree angle towards the front drivers side of the car. The Lower pipe comes in about 6-7" to the side of the outlet.

Yes I did rotate the endtank with the straight outlet. After I cut the sheetmetal, it lined up very well with the UIC pipe.

When I flipped the tank I just bent back the tabs, took the tank off and turned it around. It is sealed by a rubber gasket, which I used along with some RTV silicone to seal the thing. Its easy to rotate and seal.

HA!, the intercooler is on, and it works awesome. I did a review of the Supra SMIC and the install on the review forum. It certainly does fit a 1G, and it took me about 7 hours total, working by myself with minimal tools.
