My '95 Talon TSI AWD w/6 bolt swap

Just thought that I would introduce myself to the forum after lurking around for awhile. I currently own a 89 Dodge Colt GT(totally stock with under 92k miles - have been a member over at 4G61T.org for a few years) and have been looking for a different DD. I had been looking at a few 3000GT's until I found this diamond in the rough...actually more like a piece of coal in a bucket.

I purchased the vehicle in a driveable condition with the swap being complete. The car is high mileage 190k, but was always serviced by trained mechanics. The previous owner drove it about 150 miles a day and wanted to make sure that everything was taken care of mechanically. The body is rust-free, but has some paint fading on the roof as well as the hatch. The front bumper cover needs to be replaced, but it came with a new aftermarket OEM style cover. The interior is in good condition, leather seats show some wear, but all the options on the car work.

I have already been considering some mods to the car but they will have to be budget upgrades on a list of priority of importance(not a whole bunch of extra cash to throw at it right now).

BODY:
I am planning on going with the 97-99 front bumper conversion, rather than keep the stock cover. Rather than repaint the entire car right now, I am planning on just doing the bad areas(I have a relative who works at an autobody shop - he does all my spraying). Considering taking off the rear spoiler and rear wiper since the hatch needs sprayed as well. Sometime down the road I would like to upgrade wheels and tires with some silver 6-spoke wheels(17's likely, possibly 18's) - similar to the look of the Enkei RS6's, used wheels aren't an issue.

SUSPENSION:
I've read so much between lowering springs and coilovers...I really haven't decided. I would like to lower the stance a little, but I would also like to keep good ride quality since this is a DD...any suggestions would be great.

ENGINE: (not really mods as much as advice needed)
I will admit that I am a newbie when it comes to the 6 bolt and adding mods which subsequently will require tuning, believe me I know very little at all. I usually keep engine components fairly stock when it comes to these type of engines. I like reliability! Anyways, when I bought this car, the previous owner told me about the random misfire(which I had read about on here), he said I needed DSMLink to clear it up as well as to tune the car to it's capability. I am considering the POT mod until I can afford DSMLink. I know very little about DataLoggers, but am willing to learn. I just wonder if someone could steer me in the right direction when it comes to what I need to get to give myself a little piece of mind before I start DD'ing this car.

Like I said, I'm a NEWB to this. Please be easy on me.

Here's a couple pics of the car

Welcome to the boards. You got a good platform to start with. How many miles are on the motor? Is the car stock? I would start off by buying a aftermarket boost gauge and a pocketlogger, just so you can keep an eye on how your engine is running.

Also just and FYI, make the search button your new best friend. Make sure you search before you post a problem your having. Theres alot of people on here that will rip you a new one for posting things that have already been posted many times before. Now just start going threw the forums and reading theres alot of use full information on these boards.

The car, itself, is basically stock. The prior told me the engine had approx 25k on the rebuild. It was originally rebuilt and put into a 1g. Not long after, the car was t-boned. So it was decided to swap into this car.

I failed to mention, it has a 1g SMIC, as well as autometer boost and air/fuel gauges mounted on the door pillar.

I have been using the search button alot recently...note the "lurking", and believe me I intend to keep using it.

I'm just looking for some good advice to help me get started with this car(diagnostic tools and the such). I have decent mechanical skills, but this is a whole new game for me. I really look forward to learning and going forward with this car.

The car also has the Supra fuel pump. However, I need to do some work with the sending unit(float), because the fuel gauge is way off. The only downside to the purchase, is that I don't know how everything was put together or what exactly was used by the previous owner's mechanic with the swap. Learn as I go, I guess. Hopefully I will be able to make updates to this thread as changes occur.

I would not go with coilovers, my last car came with them and they were too harsh for me. I'm shopping for some eibachs atm.

You have a race car... how are coilovers too harsh? Back in my car hunting days I was looking at a 1g awd with JIC Magic's installed and tuned by RRE and the ride didn't seem too hash for a DD. The performance was well worth any hard bumps you may hit, nothing like going up a circular off-ramp at 60+.

* A buddy has a 2g awd with Flexes that came off of his 2g fwd, I'll have to ask him about it but I think fwd suspension might be a little bit of a softer ride because of the lower spring rates. True? or am I just retarded :p

The race cars are stiff, 500+ lb springs, they are pure caged non-streetable race cars. Perhaps since i have those to play with i dont feel the need to take on ramps at 60+mph at the sacrifice of comfort. Michigan roads suck as well.

My last car was an 03 mazdaspeed protege, which had 185# progressive springs and handled so crisp and clean it was amazing. I wish i still had that car sometimes.

anyways, just one guys opinion on some parts.

Thanks for all the compliments/opinions. I have already changed my mind on painting the car(it's gonna get a whole new coat). With the areas needing attention, it wouldn't be too much more to go ahead and do the rest. Plus, I may have the opportunity to get most of the paint products for free/next to nothing.

I paid right at $2500 for the car. It needs a little work/clean-up, but it seems like it's in decent mechanical shape. Should I be walking away with handcuffs on? :)

*UPDATE*

I hope someone can give me some advice or at least some direction. I purchased this car back in July. I've maybe driven it a total of 25 miles....it's needed some routine maintenance and cosmetic fixes. I really haven't had a lot of time to work on it and have had to order quite a few parts. I'm the type that I would rather go through a vehicle and fix what needs repaired, the first time around. Rather than drive it and wait for something to cause me to be broken down on the side of the road. Well, I repaired all the small stuff. I hate oil leaks and noticed that the oil pan could use some attention. Low and behold when I pull the pan, aluminum shavings in the pan as well as in the screen of the oil pickup. The shavings appear like they were carved off of whatever they came from. The BS's have been eliminated. The engine runs and sounds good. The possible culprits that I have considered are the oil pump gears(chewing up the pump housing) or spun bearings. I haven't pulled the caps yet to inspect, but if anyone has other ideas, let me know. This SUCKS!!!
