So to make a long story short, my car wouldnt start up because I had no oil in it. But eventually it did start and I was trying to drive to a gas station and get some oil. Well I had just got back from a track meet and It was 2 in the morning.
For some reason everyone was closed. The car kept turning off and I had to keep turning it on. Well I have oil in it now but there is a very loud knocking noise. I guess I may have messed up a rod. I talked to a mechanic over the phone and he said I could do a temporary fix or just get the entire engine rebuilt.
Does anyone know how much rebuilding the engine is going to cost me. I basically only have about 500 dollars so im hoping its that much. He said it should be between 500 and 800 dollars.

Why the hell would you run your engine without oil in the first place? :chair:

500 to 800 dollars is to cheep to be true.

If you only have 500 bucks your best bet is a used motor from ebay. A decent rebuild costs between 1500 and 2500. Rods, bearings and crank will cost you over 500 alone.

WOW!!! Oil or a taxi cab would have been much cheaper! In anycase I agree with the ebay engine idea...

Yeah.. I think that you should not own a car. Buy a 10 speed, learn to maintain that first.

Its like buying a plant, seeing if you can keep that alive, move up to a pet and later on, have a child.

Yes. About ~$1500 for a rebuild. Temporary fix? There is no temporary fix to this. Its either a new motor or a rebuild. To help you out. I would go for a new motor. You may have done more internal damage that you aren't aware of.

Wait is this the 420a? If thats the case you can pick up a complete running engine for around $300. If not I wouldnt spend the $ rebuilding.

Sorry yes it is a 420a motor non turbo. Id like to just go ahead and purchase a running one. But ive been looking around and I can only find rebuilt ones. the cheapest I have found has been $1100

If i can find on under $500 then I can do it.

Why don't you check the local boneyard down on Broadway for an engine. I think they run like $175 complete, if you can find one. I believe I've seen several.

Yeah I just found an engine on craigslist for 300 dollars. It only has 20,000 miles on it which is pretty low. The only problem is that the transmission is a manual transmission. I really dont want to do the whole automatic to manual swap. What parts would be needed to remove the manual transmission on the engine and replace it with my automatic one.

I was just messing with you. I would assume if you're just swapping over the engine and keeping the tranny you have that nothing further would need to be changed. Hopefully you're just buying the engine and leaving the tranny behind.

you can bolt the motor from craigslist up to your tranny. Just reuse the parts from you motor and put them over to the block from craigslist.

Like the torque converter and stuff. You will see what I"m talking about.
