Hello all, I don't visit here much since I own a SC400 now but my sister has a 1991 FWD turbo automatic. I'm having trouble getting the motor to sit right and 3 out of 4 mounts aren't lining up. A year ago we had the motor rebuilt and a few days ago noticed that the passenger side tranny mount wanst connected to the tranny. So today in an attempt to reconnect the mount we got nowhere. The motor sits funny now and 3 out of 4 mounts are't even close to lining up. When the rebuilt motor was dropped in, we replaced all 4 mounts with brand new ones. I have a feeling that maybe the passenger side tranny mount may be for a 5-speed instead of an auto. mount. I took some pics to try and show how everything is lining up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Passenger side mount - notice how there is no place for a bolt to screw into

Rear mount - this is the only one that is lining up

This is the passenger side wheelwell - when we put the motor in, we tried to grind out some of the frame because for some reason the motor mounts wouldnt line up. The top of the transmission is hitting the frame and we cant jack it up any higher for the big bolt to go through.

A turbo pic just for fun

Thanks!

The rear one is only tightened against the block, the long bolt that goes through the mount itself is not tight. With only the rear mount attached and the drivers mount attached, the motor is rock solid. I cant move it one bit.

Looks to me like you've got a couple wrong mounts. Notice how the unibody is pounded out around the end of the transmission housing. That's not supposed to be like that. I would say look around at some other auto 1G FWD's and see what their mounts look like versus what you have. The drivers side mount around the timing cover will be the same for all of the 1G 4G63's but the others may vary as my memory serves me. Particularly the front mount. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks, I checked online at some pics and for the front mount, i think the AWD & FWD are different and I definetly have the FWD one. The drivers side mount is definetly correct. I'm 99% sure the rear mount is the right one. The only one i'm confused about is the passenger side mount. I also don't undestand why the front mount is an inch or so off from lining up. When I put a jack under the tranny or motor and try to jack it up to align the front mount, the motor moves with the car. Soooo there is no possible way to align the front mount. I hate this car......:chair:

Oh and as far as the frame being "pounded" out, I did that when I installed the motor because the tranny was hitting it, I had to make room for the transmission to raise up a lil more. I probably should have known then that there was a problem with the mounts...

bump, any other ideas?
3 of the four mounts should line up regardless. The only one that is differant is the passenger side tranny mount. Try jacking the engine up with a jack and a block of wood on the oil pain then you should be able to shift it.

Yeah its definetly a 1G eclipse motor. When we took the motor out to have it rebuilt, we ordered all new mounts, and ever since then the motor hasnt lined up very well. I think it would be safe to say that we probably have 1 bad mount, if I had to guess i'd say its the passenger side-tranny mount. I'm gonna mess with it more this afternoon.

My buddy said to attach the drivers side and passenger mount first, then do the front and back.

I just had this problem installing my FWD 5spd the other day. Your rear mount is upside down. The flat U part needs to be on the top. I screwed this up when I was putting it together and the front one did not line up correctly. That is the only thing I noticed. I have no clue why your pass side is not lining up.

If you look at your rear mount in the picture, the tops taper out helping to align the mount when you drop the motor in. When you fix that it might drop the motor down the the transmission side and fix the problem you are having there.

I think the timing belt mount is way to small. Are you sure this engine came from a dsm? its maybe hyunday engine mount or dodge colt...:dunno:
I agree. I took a pic of my '90 drivers mount to compare.

Also if you notice on your drivers mount its not perpendicular. The angle is just off. I'm guessing its either due to a wrong drivers mount or a wrong rear mount being too long or short jacking up your drivers angle, thus throwing off the others.

After looking at your pics again I'm almost certain the rear mount is too long. Look at where its pushing your drivers mount. Its jamming it into the front of the mounting position. Hmm... Good Luck. I hate these silly issues.

P.S. Don't you love all that empty space you get when you do a pwr to manual steering swap and axe the a\c:D

i had this happen before as well, it turned out to be a wrong mount in the car which threw everything else outta wack
