Has anyone tried this before. I know a guy who did this to his VR4 and it solved the lifter tick completely. He got advise from a mechanic who said to try putting a 1/2 QT of tranny fluid to the oil and drive 1500 miles then change the oil again. 99% of the time it worked. He tried it and it sure enough it did! Has anyone done this to their DSM?

I heard about doing this, getting either 1/2 quart tranny fluid or using the oil additive engine flush stuff...

I am unsure about the 1500 miles thing tho - the only thing I ever read was put it in, idle for 10 min, then oil change.

Hopefully others with better knowledge will post, as I am curious about this as well :)

I post too at http://www.3si.org under aging vr4, I saw that thread there and am definatly interested in it. I am selling the vr4 and keeping the talon, but the vr4 is ticking like crazy, so I am going to attempt to do the tranny fluid thing. My two questions are, do I need to put the exact same, like mobil oil and tranny fluid, or can I mix or what? Also, i'm now confused, I thought it would be ok to drive it for a while, but now this is saying we shouldn't drive it. So I would also be very interested in opinions since I am strongly considering doing this.

I am sure it doesnt matter what brand tranny fluid you use.

Personally, I would find out for sure how long to keep the tranny fluid in engine before changing oil - if your gonna sell the car, you dont wanna kill it.

Im curious as well, I might try this on my 1g if I know how long to keep it in there.

You can most likely do the MCCC thing on the VR-4 as well - definatly can do it in the cylinders - I would ask if the PCV thing works the same tho.

the pcv and oil cap have been replaced on the vr4 and the tick is still there. So, I am going to go to a heavier oil (was 10w30) to 10w40 and put the tranny fluid in, but I am going to wait for more responses so I can see how long to leave it in, and yeah I don't want to kill it before I sell it. What is MCCC?

Drive..

I was told told by mech/friend you can drive it.
He said he used to do it on his cars, He drove around for like a week.

I am going to do it very soon I need to change my oil.

ok well tomorrow I was planning on getting my oil changed so here is what I will try and then post the results......Mobil 1 10w40 with whatever brand of tranny fluid. So I don't have to worry about which brand of tranny fluid I put in? I put in synthetic motor oil so should the tranny oil be synthetic?

Guys, just thought I would warn you... anyone who has done it before on cars... probably didn't do it on oil cooled turbo cars... tranny fluid is hard on seals... you are possibly gonna find a good thing, but if you take it too long then you may find a good way to blow your motor... or at least the turbos

so what about driving it 500 babied miles or something like that? Maybe there is a happy medium

NO DON'T DRIVE IT. ATF is some powerful shit.
It is ok to put in your crankcase before oil change, let it idle for 10 minutes, because the ATF is mainly on the top of the engine where the lash adjusters are. If you drive it, its a different story, ATF get mix around in high operating temperature.

It eats gaskets for breakfast. My oil cap started to leak upon doing the ATF flush. I even pour in another 1/2 quart of new oil to rinse the engine after I got all the ATF shit out.

well damn...talk about getting mixed reviews, so should I do it but just let it idle for a little while? Wouldn't the tick just come right back a few miles later after changing the oil back to normal?

The only ill effect on the turbo would be the ATF isn't really very lubrious and it will affect the viscosity and wet-out characteristics of the oil.

This is an OLD mechanics trick that I feel has been replaced with a safer chemical solution with high detergent oils like Rislone. The high detergent oils do the same thing as the 'ATF trick' without significant risk to bearing surfaces or to the degree of potential damage to Viton or Buna-N seals. You can pick it up at any auto parts store.

As for MCCC, Mitsubishi Combustion Chamber Cleaner, it is really a mixture of Methlyene Chloride, Toluene, and Xylene. These solvents will attack carbon deposits and remove buildup on the dash of the pistons and the heads of the valves. Its good stuff, just impossible to get now that Methlyene Chloride can no longer be distributed openly.

I have looked everywhere and cannot find that Rislone.....I have looked at advanced auto parts, O'Reilys, walmart......where the heck is that crap???

Do the tranny fluid additive, just dont drive it. Dont spool the turbo either. Just let it idle for ten or fifteen minutes, then flush it, and add new oil.
If you leave it in too long, you will have oil all over your engine compartment.

but if it did actually take the tick away, wouldn't it just come back soon since it will be just normal oil in it

No using the tranny fluid has more detergents (than usual oil) or something, it will supposedly clean out the crap causing the tick...Its not inhibiting the tick, its cleaning the tick!

HA! I use Methylene Chloride at work every day! I bet I could mix some stuff up! Only I would have to figure a way out to spray it like an aerosol. I guess being a carcinogen the feds don't like people playing with it.

I was thinking of putting that Magical Mystery Oil in before I change my oil (drive 500 miles). See if that will work. I was told that it really cleans up all the gum and varnish.
