Hey guys,

I just bought an automatic '99 Eclipse GS with 109k miles that was traded in to the dealership. I was planning on going over everything in a few weeks and would like some tips on what to look out for.

I also need to replace some cabin parts, mostly cosmetic or so (power mirror control, seat adjustment handles, fog light plastic mount, cup holder cover), and was wondering if there's a good place to get them online or if I should just get them from the dealership, since I noticed that DSMtrader didn't have them.

Also, the previous owner replaced the front bumper of the car with a different colored stock one, so I'm looking for a good place to paint-match it (read that Maaco wasn't that great...).

Thanks!

For parts like that, eBay is a good place, or keep checking DSMTrader. Depends how picky you are. New parts from the dealer will always be more $, but they will be brand new and perfect. Sometimes, stuff like that isn't that much from them. Just call and check.

Painting your bumper is an easy job for any body shop. Just call around and check prices. Just remember, you usually get what you pay for.

Hey, congratulation dude! You got ahead of me. Nice! Is your 99' GS with the OZ Package plus the Huge Turbo Wing?
I wish...I have the small spoiler. I saw an OZ package one while shopping around, but it was $10k and 60k miles

Hmm...I've found a junkyard :D Gonna see if I can get any parts from there.

Also, what's the max speed of a stock '99 Eclipse GS speedometer? Mine's a custom one and I've been told that it was for a GS-T...

The highest number on the speedo is 160, then there is one more mark (170) after that. I believe the turbo models are the same, but I'm not at home so I can't go look and see.
So the max speedometer speed for a nonturbo GS is 170 mph? I've been having a problem w/my car where my actual speed is ~8 mph faster than what my speedometer says, and the guys at Goodyear told me that it's because the car has a custom GS-T speedometer

I don't think you can just simply swap gauge clusters between N/T & Turbo cars. Do you have the stock wheels/tires, or at least the stock sizes? Do you have any kind of gauge faces (indiglo or whatever) on there? Maybe the previous owner had some and removed them or whatever. He probably messed up the calibration on the speedometer.

Pull your gauge cluster apart and take the needle off of the speedometer. Put the gauge cluster back in (with the cover & everything still off), and go drive it with someone else driving another car. Find a nice stretch of open road and have them set their cruise exactly on 40 MPH or something. Then, while driving, push your needle back on exactly at 40 MPH while keeping pace with them. You may have to repeat this a couple times before you get it exactly right. I know this sounds dumb, but it's not that hard. I've had to do it a couple time when installing gauge faces. Good luck!

My tires are Cooper Lifeliner 205/55R16 Touring SLE, and I think they're bigger than the stock tires, but the thing if it was the tires, then my odometer should've shown a difference w/my mom's car (we had the two cars match speed for a stretch of road)

Bah, edit time limit

Yeah, the gauges are custom after-market ones: reverse glow Eurolite gauges (See them here). And I suspect they might be miscalculated, but not even the dealership is willing to calibrate the speedometer for some reason
