no cat no muffler, no problem?

I am thinking about finally buying my exaust and I'm maybe going in a new direction with it. I see everyone buying 2 and a half and three inch systems with highflow cats and large open mufflers.

Do you guys think it would be rediculusly loud to run just all through 3 or 2 an a half? I have messed around with my muffler off and it is nice to hear all those great turbo sounds.

I think I could get one of the dsm shops to build one for me. And the nice thing is it would be about 100-200 bucks cheaper becasue of the lack of a muffler. Also it'd be a few pounds lighter.

Do you think this is a little nutty?

if you don't mind getting pulled over for it, then do it. Check your state laws on how loud your exhaust can be before you even try though.

I know this might sound selfish and stupid but if harley can do it why can't I? West Virginia isn't to strict on things like this. I'm not a big street racer nor do I drive far to work (five miles both ways. My exposure to cops is minimal.

I just hate the idea of paying 600-700 bucks for an exhaust just to put a cork on the end of it.

u can ask the question if a harley can do it why cant i all u want, harley's r on theyre own set of rules almost. between my fathers and friends, neither have ever gotten a ticket. and they both will deafen u.i got pulled over for having a 2.5" HKS catback exhaust and TP, he said its 'too loud' well a harley went blarring by while i was pulled over, cop didnt even think to turn and look at him.

goto a muffler shop. buschur im sure might do it, but ur lookin at a nice penny. muffler shop will bend whatever u want + u can do it in ur own town/city.

well the only problem I have with muffler shops is the lack of respect for dsm's and imoprts in general. I call them to ask if they can bend 3" and I get "yeah sure what are you wanting it in", well then I tell them and its just like "oh well we can't do that". And they procede to tell me that it can't be bent that tight and some other crap. I'm just not a fan of the places around here.

It cost my 260$ to get my already dual exhaust on my 77 custom deluxe hooked up and JB FUCKING WELDED to my headers I installed. All the ass's did was clamp the collector to my existing duals and jb welded the gap. I picked it up and took the truck to work (10miles away) and they had already started to break the jb weld. I took the truck to the main branch of the shop and they guy that did it ended up getting fired. I guess it is against thier rules to do that kind of work.

To make a long story short, I trust no one anymore. and this was 4 years ago.

A local shop did the same thing to me, terrible. I went there asking for 3" on my Eclipse, and he says "sorry, it can't be done. Especially since you have to go over the back axle. Besides, you already have a 2.25" exhaust already, it won't do too much anyways." I just left that place, that guy was a friggin' idiot! I had stock exhaust!!! And there are plenty of companies that make 3" for DSM's. I just left that place and accepted the person's idiocy (sp?)......just face it. Don't go to local shops, most of them don't know 3" piping from their own sister's a-hole..... :p

I had my cat back custom made at a local shop here and it turned out great. I ordered a resonator from RRE instead of a muffler and it works great. It isnt loud at all.

Yes I have 3" catback. Yes it goes over the rear axle. All for $200. :D

on a side of this thread, i was wondering if any one had pro/cons of an open 3in d/p, out the side. we have been building a drag only GSX, so it will be trailered and only run at the track, is it more beneficial running open d/p or w/ a full exhaust?

its not illegal, unless it exceeds the db rating. tell em its a track only car then =p

I went with apexi. Very cool system. If you get a custom exhaust go AMS. The are a pretty good company.

About the Harley thing... Harley cycles come with that lous ass exhaust stock, so it's legal. Should it be, probably not. But are we going to put our only motorcycle manufacturer out of business... NOPE!

stanfosd, where was this shop at? I have honestly spoke with a dozen local shops and they either say outright no or no because it is illegal.
I think it was a 'muffler brothers' shop. It was here in 'nowhereville (read: bellefontaine), OH. About 4-5 hours from the WV border.

Well I tell ya what guys, I give up. I'm going to order my buscher 2 and a half inch stainless cat back next week. I cant get a good deal around this town to save my life. The final shop I would even go to told me they would do it. For a GRAND! I swear if I had a bender and a welder I would hook everyone in here up!

As I see it I can always get the ss dp from buscher and just bolt up the test pipe at that time. My only problem is I'll have to have the test pipe cut in half and welded to my existing dp. Some ass cut the factory flanges out of my cat and welded in a shit one.

Nice work jim bob, you inbred butt-pirate. geezzz

Buy a nice 3" dp, and get a dynomax bullet from Summit. Have one of the local idiots weld the bullet to a section of 3" pipe with a flange at the end, and a turndown on the other side of the muffler. Then just bolt it up yourself. It will be loud as hell (trust me :D ), but it sounds really mean. very inexpensive too.

Actually, you are wrong. Yes, Harleys are a little loud straight out of the factory. But the really obnoxious bikes have custom pipes (Vance & Hines, etc).

Trust me, I work at the Corporate HQ for H-D here in Milwaukee. On nice days there are 50-100 bikes lined up outside the building.

No muffler will sound really bad, turbo or not.

It will have alot of the metal sound, it will sound like a lawn mower or truck, worse than a harley.

If that's what you like, go for it

At least get a glasspack or bullet style muffler, it'll filter out the rough sound and you get the nice rumble.

i had a 300zx (93 model) N/T and I just cut both the mufflers off.. it had one pipe running to the back of the car and a "Y" on it that went to to mufflers..i just cut it off at the y.. it sounded so friggin sweet.. like a ferrari or something..

i'm cuttin the muffler off of my TSi tommorow morning and going to run w/out it for a few days and see how it sounds before i have a custom one built by a hillbilly shop here..

I've driven with nothing but a 3in 02 housing and it was hella loud. Right now I have a Full 3in from the turbine to the end. I use a Dynomax muffler and have a slight turndown that dumps about where the stock cat would be. It is very light and the sound revibes off of the ground back up onto the body making it extremly loud inside. You have to have the windows cracked down at least a little or it will give you a massive headache. I noticed that my car likes to throw flames on the shifts sometimes and it is badass so long as there is no oil or anything under you car to burn. I think you shouldn't do it unless your car is a sat night special and your good buddys with the local law enforcement.

hehe.. its tulsa, oklahoma.. my micron full system on my racebike is ten times louder than any car i've heard and i've yet to get pulled on it.. most farm trucks around here run open headers or glass packs that HURT your hears as they go by.. they tried getting noise restrictions about 2 years ago but they found out that the police harleys couldn't pass their own law!

I have a 2-1/2 dp, 3" exhaust on my 90 gst. No cat no muffler. I have gude cams and a 20g on the car. Ported O2 housing and a 95 manifold. The car had a very deep and grumpy sound but was loud as hell. At idle sitting at a red light the car can pass the "45 second sit 1 car length behind the cop car test". But anything above 2500rpm watch out. It was hard to get a street race. That is because it sounded like a very built 5.0 with cams. The power was sick though. It allowed me to run 25psi on pump and outrun 3g rx7's and mildly worked supras down the mile. I am now going to put in a spin tech 3" in with (2) 2-1/2" out tiped muffler.
