Nut fell into my down pipe.

I dropped a nut down into my down pipe and now I can't get it out. :chair:

Its rattling around in there and it's real annoying. I have a welded test pipe, so i can't get it out that way either.

I tried 2 steppin to see if the pressure would force it out, but it didn't work. I even drove 3 hours on the highway, and still it didn't leave.

Any ideas on how to get it out??

Re: Nut fell into my down pipe. Fuckin A.

Get one of those flexable magnets. Might even have to find a way to extend it. Or get a coat hanger and just keep trying to scoop it up. Then once you got it close enough use a magnet to grab it.

Do you have a cat? What kind of muffler do you have?

As intuitive as a magnet seems, its not selectively magnetic and would be hard to get very far down the pipe since its gonna cling to the sides and hang up on every seam or ridge. An electromagnet on the end of a cable would be able to snake down the pipe and when you get close to where the nut is, you can turn it on and drag it out. I think a 9v battery would prolly be strong enough.

Seal the back of your tailpipe, drop the down pipe and try to suck it our with a strong shop vac.

Or get a strong magnet, try and locate the nut and drag it out from the bottom of the pipe, if that makes any sense. Like if you put a piece of metal on top of a table, and drag it from the bottom with a magnet.

Just leave it in there and tell noobs it's your turbo spool :D. Haha, kidding of course. I agree with locating where it is on the downpipe then using a strong magnet on the outside to drag it out. If that doesn't work, maybe you could glue a magnet to a clothes hanger and see if that will be strong enough to grab it.

Seriously, quit being lazy, pull the exhaust off, and turn it up, and shake it. Or do what you're doing already, be lazy, and bitch about it.
Or, stop being a lazy ass and just unbolt the down pipe. Do it right, do it once. As stated, by the time you created this thread and wait for a reply, you could have done it and be done with it.
Fuck all u guys. It was a fuckin question assholes.

And thanks everyone else. I tried a magnet from the outside, but it was clearly not strong enough. I have a straight pipe thats welded in; no cat. I guess I have to unbolt the whole thing.

Once again, fuck you guys above.

If you can't or don't want to drop the exhaust and tip the nut out, try using a magnet on the outside of the pipe. If it's strong enough, you could probably drag the magnet along the entire length of the pipe from front to back and get the nut to follow along on the inside until you reach the tail pipe. Of course, if the nut is non-magnetic stainless steel, the magnet won't work.

Well that nut surely damaged your exhaust pipe inner coating. You need to have a new exhaust system put on. Maybe this time you could have someone weld in some flanges so you can take it apart when you drop another nut down the damn thing.

Or you can take it up to 88mph and go back in time and leave a note to yourself making sure you don't drop the nut in the downpipe, be careful not to interact with your past self as the result of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum and destroy the entire universe! Granted, that's a worst-case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.
