Well I'm finally getting serious about getting my 20G on and I was just wondering if it's o.k. to run it without the water lines and just oil cool it. I bought the bolt to plug the water pipe and also got a relocation oil feed line that goes from the oil filter housing instead of the head where there's not much pressure. I did a few searches and didn't come up with anything concrete, so I figured I'd see if any of you guys knew. Also, if it is o.k. to plug the water pipe and just run the oil lines, is there anything else I need to be aware of when doing this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If there are provisions to water cool the turbo then do so, I'm not sure why you would'nt want to water cool it. It was designed to run with coolant, if you don't water cool it chances are you'll wreck the bushings in no time flat.

The reason I don't want to run water lines is b/c I think the compressor housing will be too big. I guess I could use some smaller radiator type hose to add length, but it would be nice to just oil cool it? Anybody second GVR4's advice?

its been done before. i have a friend running a 20g with no water cooling. so far nothing goin wrong. the big thing with that though is using a turbo timer or making sure you cool down the turbo before you just turn off the car.

Thank-you Dr. I've heard tell of a few Honda in the area with 20G's and they're not water cooling, but I didn't know for sure. Goddamit, a turbo timer, huh? That's another item on the never ending list to get my car excatly where it needs to be. Anybody on here actually doing it (no coolant to turbo)themselves?

what is up, man? hopefully i will scan that receipt to you today...

i don't have a 20g but i would suggest using the water lines AND adding a turbo timer...(and a fluidyne or equivalent radiator while you are at it.)

My .02 cents. it may run forever without that stuff but, why take the chance?

I've got the fluidyne and 2 slim fans that blow right on the turbo/manny, so that's taken care of. I asked the same question on another forum and the consensious was that while it's been done without problems, the turbo is made to be water cooled, so it's a good idea to leave it that way. I lack common sense sometimes.

you could also just keep the car running when you stop. (30 seconds for "down the street"; 2 minutes if you were driving in "fun mode' briefly
;) ; and like 3 or four minutes if you exit of an interstate to gas up after extended 80+ MPH cruises.

i would get a turbo timer as soon as you can though. it just makes life easier (unless you count the thousands of times you have to explain why your car is still running and how it turns itself off... )

The turbo timer is on the list along with the 16 other $200+ items I need before I'm satisfied with my car. Good thing I'm not driving it right now and it can be down for as long as it needs.

I am running a TD06H-20G myself and its only oil cooled. The housing has no space for water cooling at all. What I did with my original water lines was purchase some hose to reroute the water lines that ran to the stock T-25 into eachother.

So far, I have about 5000 miles on the 20g and no problems at all.

Ive been running my Evo III without coolant lines for about 2 years now, no issues.

Oh yeah, I dont pussy fart around running 15psi. I run 25-27psi with methanol on the car pretty much daily. Actually, I only turn it down to autocross.

Hmm, I wonder when my stock head studs are gonna give and my headgasket blow

i have an 18g on my car from forcedperformance thats only oil cooled. so far i've put about 5k miles on it and no problems. the oil line is hooked up to the oil filter housing.

FWIW, I looped mine so I could put lines in when I got some. But using a turbo timer, Ive never been too worried about it.

If I was road racing then I would probably get off my butt and hook it back up, but auto-xing doesnt get it hot enough to worry me much.
