Would you all consider your DSM's reliable as daily drivers? Is yours dependable or only good on the track. I'd like to know about everyone's T/E/L.

I'd call mine reliable. The only non-maintenance thing I've had to do is replace the harmonic balancer.

On the wife's Talon, the only non-maintenance thing I've had to do is rebuild the turbo. And at 140,000 that could be considered maintenance. :D

If you want to remain showroom stock, these cars are not overly maintenance intensive. Aside from manufacturing issues with the transfer case for the AWD, timing belt changes at 60,000 miles, and the normal fluids and maintaining you would do on any car the DSM is a workhorse. Give the car a little time to warm up in the morning and cool down after driving and the turbo will last a VERY long time.

i agree...
my Talon AWD is running 15psi on a holey exhaust system and a leaky ex. mani...

i run it pretty decently; a couple fast 1stgear-2ndgear sprints every other day.... and its reliable as hell

although the clutch is gone :D
but what can one expect from 6000rpm drag launches on a clutch that hasn't been replaced in its 105,000mile lifespan?

i get 14mpg when i gun it all the time (i ran the hell out of it for a weekend; just to see)
and about 20mpg when i take it easy... a lot better than my 300zx TT that got 14mpg when i took it easy :)

DSM'S ARE THE BEST CARS ON THE ROAD RIGHT NOW! I WOULD NOT BUY ANY OTHER CAR!

I have 192K on my car. all is going fine. As long as you keep up on the car it won't let you down. beat the snot out of it. don't change oil ro mantane the car as needed and it WILL be the biggest money pit around.

Well, my car is very heavily modded an I'll rather take an trip in it than my honda accord!! All cars are the same it all comes down to the condition of car when bought if not new, MAINTENANCE and if your car is modded,TUNING affects reliablty. Turbo cars need more attenion than NT cars in my opion.Hell an YUGO can be reliable, if taken care of!! But racing this cars the transmissions are sh%t!!! And won't last period!! IF YOUR POWER SHIFTING!!(shifting without lifting gas pedal)

I've had 3 non-maintance things:

1) Shreaded belt on A/C
2) Clutch @ 87,000mi
3) Rusted heat shield on cat

If the previous owner had canged belts at 60K, I'd have a/c and the original head and oil pump.

I had read that Consumer Reports did a study that every car built today WILL last 150k+ miles with proper maintance.

re:

The guy who will hopefully sell me mine sent me some pics of the car. Its a 93 TSi AWD, the heat shield is rusting a bit but he said he can take care of it if I want to (yes). He said that DSM told him that the 60k mile timing belt change was only a factor on the older cars (90-91). I am not sure if that's BS or not.

Talk about reliable!

I'm the 2nd owner on my NT. The only thing that's had to be done is 2 timing belt replacements and a head rebuild cuz they f*ck*d up the 2nd timing belt install. (12 of 16 bent)

I have beat the living Sh*t out of my 2G, and she loves every minute out of it! She definitely has a fetish with that stuff... ;) Seriously though... I have modded my 2G a bit, and I race it regularly, both on the track and the street.
It is a mid 13 second car,, but get it on the freeway and I can average 430+ miles to a tank of gas @ 75~80 mph..

To copy off of Lee a bit, I would take it on a road trip any day without any hesitation..
I'm not going to lie, I've had to tear down & repair the tranny 4 times, (replace synchro's once and differential 3 times ) and have completely nuked 2 clutches... But these failures are completely and totally my fault, and in no way should reflect on the quality or workmanship of DSM's.

Like I said,, I drive my car HARD, but I also do everything in my power to meticulously maintain her. I bought her at a year old, and 11k on the odometer.. Since then, I have taken her on numerous road trips. To date she has 78k on her odometer and she has never left me stranded... When properly cared and maintained, these cars will last FOREVER!

Good luck!

Not me...

If the decision was made on reliability alone, I wouldn't touch another DSM with a ten foot cattle prod.

I'm willing to admit that I had a lemon, however. My '92 just had plain bad Ju-ju.

I think reliability is directly related to maintenance. Checking your car and paying attention to those little noises before they become big noises is important. I think DSM's are fairly reliable, but I do believe that a Honda "on the average" will be more reliable. I have owned both and neither has had any real problems but then again I try to maintain my vehicles properly. I have seen people beat the sh*t out of DSM's and barely take care of them, yet they still keep running without problems, and then again I have seen people baby them and lots of problems occur.

So maintenance is important, but so is luck!

Any belt driven timing system needs to be replaced relatively early compared to a chain system. The 420A and 4G63 both require T-Belt changes within 60,000 miles. If you don't, it turns into a ticking time bomb and its not a matter of IF it will go but rather WHEN. Do yourself a favor and save yourself some money and change that belt.
