im trying to replace the motor mounts in my car, and i am kind of stuck. i got the prothane bushings, and the engine mount where closest to the fire wall looks like all one piece it is attached to a bracket. what do i do? am i supposed to burn the middle of it out? 1990 laser rs turbo

That's exactly what you should do. I assume you have the mount out of the car already. Take a propane torch and torch that thing. You will need to relight it a few times and peel the crumbs out each time. After a bit you should be able to stick a screwdriver in the center and pry it out. After you get that out, torch it again and it will burn much better because air can now get in the center. After you burn as much out as you can, put it in a vice or screw it down to a big board and get your sawzall out. Carefully cut through the metal ring and once you're through, pry it out by bending it inwards with a screwdriver and it should pop right out. Be warned, the melted rubber makes a mess and sticks to your hands like crazy so avoid touching it too much. You can then wash them as good as possible and scrub them with steel wool. Tape up the inside of it where the new mount goes and paint the rest. Good as new. This is exactly how I did mine.

thank you you were a big help, however in the prothane kit there were two different size sets of bushings, one fits the sleeve(without cuting it out) on the lower a-arm,and the other would fit without that sleeve which are the ones i used in there, where does the other set go? they came in the same package as the bigger bushing for the lower a arm. do they give you two sets just incase you dont rip that sleeve out?

Do you happen to have a pic? I'm confused. I bought the entire kit for my 1g. Left(tranny mount) and right engine mount were both totaly new inserts. I had to burn those out. The rear was a total insert as well, had to torch that one. The only one I didn't have to torch was the front because those were slip in's on each end of the stock rubber bushing.

NO. Every bushing only goes in one place. Read the directions that came with them, they say the part number of each bushing and where it goes. And believe it or not, there should be a part number printed on each bushing.

My bushing set didn't have any part numbers on the bushings themselves anywhere. The packaging did but it was pretty vague as to where exactly each one went. They do only fit in one place so it should be pretty easy to figure out.

i didnt make myself all that clear, i also bought the suspention kit as well and their was no directions for them and only one pagage said what they were for. if it came with directions i would have figered it out by now. there was one pagage that was for the sway bar, another package was for the rr tracking arm came with 2 bushings ( ok) now the other package came with the bigger bushing for the tracking arm, and two other bushings that i have no idea where they go the package says front control arm, but these are the bushing that do not fit with the original bushing sleeve (which i took out) the bushing are to small to fit there. they look like they would fit if i would have left that sleeve in. was i not supposed to take the sleeve out? sorry i was so long i wanted you to under stand exactly what i was talking about

Hi, I will install the motor inserts I never done it. The post helps me a lot, but I have some mount replace newbie questions just to be sure. :D

The kit I bought has instructions inside but said i need get out some kind of ring around the rubber. On some mounts. is that true forgive me i does not check still the rear and the tranny mount to see if have a metal ring inside the rounded base of the motor mount.

Then i only need to burn the rubbers and sand it? The prothanes will fix right?

If have a inside metal ring i need get it out too? Or the prothanes will fix?

The mounts specially the rear have a deviation form center, the prothanes are centered is not a problem right?

i apologize i dont speack english forgive my grammar i hope undertand me, forgive if i use many "I"

If there are metal rings in the mount, they need to go period for the Prothanes to fit. Burn the rubber out and then cut the metal rings with a sawzall and ream them out with a screwdriver. The front one on a 1g is an insert so that is the only one you don't have to burn anything out of or cut the ring out of. The other 3 must be torched and cut for the Prothanes to go in.
