Question about outside edge of front tires being chewed to hell

Pretty much what the topic says.

I rebuilt pretty much everything in my car. I swapped out my power steering rack for a manual rack.

One of the first things I noticed was that my tires were getting chewed down to the belting in a matter of days so I took it into a shop and got an alignment done.

It still chewing the outside edge of the tires to hell though. I keep rotating my tires so I don't get it a flat but within a couple days I got wire and belting hanging out of the edge of whatever tire is on the passenger front.

The guy at the shop said there is no adjustment for camber in the front of the 1G's but they adjusted the out of wack toe and it should stop the tires from being eaten but it sure didn't.

Its better but its still doing it.

How can I go about fixing this issue? I want to put on new tires but I cant afford to let them get chewed to shit like my other ones.

Again this is only the very outside edge that’s affected.

There is no factory camber adjustment on the 1G's, the guy is correct. But, you can make your own camber adjustment. Take the two bolts out of the strut where it mounts to the knuckle and notch the holes in the strut (longate them) Now you have the back and forth play you need to adjust the camber. Tighten the bolts where the computer says it is within specs. I know this is a Joe Dirt way of doing things, but it's what ya gota do.

Wouldn't a camber problem (I assume it would be negitive unless you raised the car!) cause tire wear on the inside of the tire?

It sounds more like a problem with toe. Although you said was adjusted?!?
Maybe really worn out tie rods??

I've never had problems like this with the car. The only thing we changed suspension wise was removing the power steering and installing a manual rack which also included 2 new tie rod ends.

The toe was fucked when we first put it in but like I said I took it to an alignment shop.

So anyway question about this Ingalls kit. What exactly is in this kit for a 1G? Eccentric bolts or something else?

Also about making the holes in the struts bigger, both holes or just one or the other?

I was under the impression camber didn’t affect the tires like this but damn the toes been corrected as far as I know and I'm still killing tires.

Like I said, no problems before the rack swap. I know I’ve developed a bad wheel bearing on the affected tire but I mean shit how bad does a wheel bearing have to be to cause tire wear like I’m seeing. I don't think it’s the bearing.

I have a buddy who had a bad wheel bearing and it would make a Yokohoma 711 bald in about 2 months. It started eatting the outside and worked its was in till the whole tire was bald.just a thought

Even if camber was crazy positive, it wouldnt wear the outside of the tire to the cords in a couple days.

Try jacking up one front wheel at a time, grab the sides and see if you have any play that way.

If nothing, then the alignment shop sucks. I got an alignment not long ago where they have all 4 wheels slightly toe'd out even though I said to put it at 0. I found out they suck and just use tape measurers for everything.

Now I just do my own alignment the DG way.

Ball joint on that side was new little less then a year ago. No squeaking when I hit the brakes and slow to a stop.

It's gotta be camber related I guess.

Camber doesnt kill tires toe does. Well camber will slowly wear tires if and only if you have an extreme amount of it, enough that if you look at the wheel you think man that looks really slanted. and usually then its only because most people that feel the need for excessive camber also feel the need for excessive toe out (ie me). Toe kills tires, camber doesnt.

Personally id take it back to the shop and have them redo it.

I'm thinking it might be the wheel bearing. The worse this one gets, the worse the tires get.

I'm thinking the bearing might be so bad the toe is all jacked to hell.

Only thing I havent tried yet. I'm going to pull everything apart and have a new bearing pressed in tomarrow sometime and I'm going to notch out my strut on that side well I'm at it then take it back to the shop and bitch that they need to redo the alingment.

I just looked at the tire on that side tonite and so much wire belting it hanging out I cant even drive it. It was bald on that side but no wire hanging out, I drove 100 miles and there is wire hanging out completely all the way around the tire now.

I'm about to go put on my old rims/tires now so I can drive it into my friends so we can rip it apart to fix the bearing.

Hehehe yes I would say so but damnit, I'm not putting on new tires until I figure out why in the hell only the outside inch or so is being eaten.

I took it back to the shop that did the alingment, they said the bearing is the worst they have ever seen so I was like they why did you guys try alinge it?

The kid was like well last week the bearing wasn't that bad and the manager was like but you told him it was a little bad last time and the guy was like yes but it wasn't this bad.

So needless to say I get another free alingment when its fixed.

Thats when they told me it was going to be $340 dollars to fix the wheel bearing and they could do it right then lol.

Going to do the damn thing myself and then go make them do the alingment again.

Going to notch out the KYB GR-2's about 4 mm too well its off so hopefully I can get the camber fixed too.
