Ran with low oil. Possible engine damage.

1st... I check my oil level every 2 weeks or so.
Car has no oil leaks.
Fairly new built motor with good compression numbers.

So car was down for a while because of a leaky intake manifold gasket. It was sitting for 2 weeks. Change the gasket friday before leaving to San Diego. Run the car at idle. Check my oil pressure which was normal when cold. But when warm I was getting 40 psi of oil pressure which isn't cool at all.
Shut the car off in a hurry and go to check dipstick. With the world crushing down on me I see only a spec of oil showing. :tat:

I don't know but I think I might have ran the car like that for couple days.

I seriously don't know how I'm losing oil. Never was burning oil before, so that was a big shock.

Anyways... I'll probably have to check my oil pan + bearings tomorrow.
Then if by chance there are no mechanical damages, I'll have to find out where the fuck the oil is going?

I'm guessing turbo seals? Will have to check my intake pipes. I was checking shaft play just last week though. Everything is fine. There is no smoke under wot. I'll redo a compression test tomorrow.

Any input? :dunno:

I'm getting more and more distant from that car.

Dude, total bummer. Do you have any smoke at all? When my seals went I was getting smoke like 24/7 and it was coming out of everywhere, so you would probably notice ASAP if the seals were blown.

I'd suggest a compression test to make sure nothing is sticking/fuct up after having low oil, and to make sure your rings are still good..if low, do a leakdown test.

You sure you don't leak oil at all? I thought they all leaked somewhere? :D

Pull your intercooler pipes off and take a look.

That blows balls dude, sorry to hear it.

Well... it still could have good compression, but there could still be damage to the bearings. I'll take a look a little later. I'll cut open the oil filter and check for metal flakes in there.

A blown rubber ring seal behind the thrust plate on the cold side on your turbo would cause you to loose oil into the intercooler without you noticing.. Sounds like you were only a quart low, you should have no engine damage.

I dont think you have anything to fear, when you see no oil on the dip stick, thats when you worry. If the engine sounded healthy, I think you will be fine. I say cut the filter and check for gold.

I remember hearing, and I dont know how true this is, that Shep runs with 3 or 4 quarts of oil during his runs. Check the filter, I think you might be fine.

Did you floor it during this time?? I went 2 quarts low once, about two months later i lost a balance shaft bearing. The block was fine otherwise. If i recall you don't have those and if you didnt beat the shit out of it, it'll be fine.

I run my truck till the knock gets to loud to hear the radio. Then I add oil.

Well... I just took out my licp after the j-pipe. There is a fine stream of oil throughout, no puddle though. Remember that my valve cover recirculates back into my intake. So a bit of oil would be normal.

On the other hand, looking at the turbo though, it seems to be leaking a bit of oil around the turbine housing band clamp area. Maybe much more under full boost? Any sure way to know if the leak is from the turbo, or do I have to remove the fucker, open it, and inspect the seals?
How tight is that clamp supposed to be. I tried tightening it a bit more from under the car, and it rotates pretty easily? I'm really clueless about the inside guts of a turbo but could that relate to the whole problem?

Oh... no shaft play at all.... I mean the turbo has less than 2k miles on it since I bought it new. And yes, it's a legit E316g.

Any more input of stuff I should be looking for?
Help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Good point.

About the clamp, I always tighten mine down so theres no movement, not sure if that where your leaks coming from but its a possibility. Tighten that thing up!

I think what I'll do is do the damn oil change, clean up the intake, and take a look at my oil level from time to time. Then we'll see where we go from there.

On a side not, does shaft play relate directly with blown seals?

Also... could the turbo be let oil pass through only at full boost? I mean it does see around 25 psi at wot.

This is really bugging me no joke.

*Just a heads up... It's always worth it to check your oil every time before you go. *Just because you "never" know when anything can go wrong behind you. :dunno:

Maybe pull the line from the VC to the intake and let it dump into a ghetto catch can for a while and see if your j pipe stays clean. I don't know if that's feasible, but its an idea.

Seems like i'm having this problem too man. I just changed my oil last week and today checked the oil. I look on the dipstick and it looked fine as first til I wiped it off then tried to get another reading and noticed there was nothing on it. I ended up putting 3 QT's in and now its good. I have no idea where it could have went besides a tiny leak on my return line.

Well I opened the oil filter. Nothing in there.
Redone compression check which came out fine.
Changed oil + filter and went for a nice cruise with couple wot pulls for couple hours until I blew a coupler :).

ANyways, I putted home, and there is no oil burnt.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
