I did a search and i found a thread that said basically you can remove the bumper (easiest) or remove the fog lights and bracket (almost as easy) to get at the fourth bolt. Is there any way to do this without removing the bumper or foglights and there brackets? thank you for any and all help!

No, not really. By the time you waste all the time and figure out another way at the bolts you could have already had the bumper off and back on again. Just leave the mout for easier access next time.

The only reason i don't want to remove the bumper is when i removed my license plate bracket the bolts snapped off and left studs still in the car. When i tried to take the bumper off to get rid of those more bolt heads snapped off and I just had similar problems with my drives side foglight I just replaced. So i was really hoping I wouldn't have to battle with any of that. thanks guys for the help and if you think of any other way please post up

I have my headlight ( passenger side ) held on by one bolt. Its so I can take the thing out when I go to the track. All I have to do to remove the headlight is remove three bolts, unhook the passenger side of the bumper, pull the headlight and put the bumper back on. Takes about 3 minutes.

Then you have a problem that needs attention. Soak them all in PB. Let it sit. Then proceed to take out all the bolts. (don't forget the big 4 underneath the car) If you break any and the studs are broken off inside, drill out the stud and re-tap the whole. Then use all new bolts when putting it back on. This will fix your problem permanently. Don't be afraid to drill and tap new holes, its a lot easier than you think.

I was afraid it would come to that...just a lot of work just to make my headlights black on the inside hahaha , but I guess it does need to be done. Thank you for all the help!!!!

Make sure when you replace the bolts you replace them with some blingy SS bolts. They are only like 30cents more a piece and you'll never have to worry about it rusting away. lol

BTW Are you blacking out the headlights on your 98 TSI AWD. If so I would REALLY like to see your finished product. :D

yes im blacking them out, finished it last night but didnt have a chance to take a picture since it rained today but ill take some hopefully tomorrow

You can get to that lower bolt behind the bumper cover without removing the bumper cover. You need to work a 12" extension and socket between the bumper cover and lower edge of the light and then line it up on the bolt. Put a towel down on the bumper cover between it and the extension to protect the paint. Once you have some practice this method is pretty quick and easy.

YES! If you are talking about the bolt under the headlight get a longer rachet (sp?) and push the bumper down and stick the rachet under the light and take out the bolt

As far as rusty bolts breaking. Soak them with WD40 or PB but just as important, don't keep turning to loosen. Loosen just a little till you feel it binding up then turn back clockwise. Keep doing this back and forth and each time it will loosen a little further. You have to work the rust out of the threads.

It takes some time to get them out this way but a hell of a lot quicker than drilling and tapping.
