Alright, I bought my car a little over a year ago and when I bought it it had a welded VC. It was always a PITA to get it to stay in reverse without it popping out. After I removed the VC and replaced with a stock VC it was a lot better at staying in reverse, but it still pops out. I have no clue what it could be. If any one has any ideas that would be greatly appreciated. Im looking at a fully built stage 3 TRE for $800 so I might just buy that.

Ok, still having this problem. It will not stay on at all. If I hold it with all my arm strength it still pops out. I was thinking that the synchro is FUBAR. Where is the reverse synchro located in the tranny. I have been thru these trannies before just dont know where 5th and reverse are.

Not really the answer im looking for, im looking into how to fix it. I have read that about the gears though.

I also cant go above maybe 3 mph in rverse so im constantly pushing the clutch back or slippin the shit outta it. I know my GF wont be able to do that.

I'm not sure if it will fix the problem but there is a vfaq on shifter movement that is not that hard do, and it might fix it if it is your problem. Go to vfaq and look in the shifter section and it's the 4th up from the bottom.

I remember reading somewhere that if it pops out usually means somethings worn or those 2 36mm nuts are loose

Take your front case off the tranmission (you don't have to drop it either)

Then you will see 2 36mm nuts. Tightnen them if they are loose or just check them..

Its just a suggestion but I read somewhere thats the rememdy

Yeah ive already done everything pretty much physically possible with out going into the tranny. Ive been thru my tranny a few times but haven't looked at reverse. I'm gonna have the tranny out in a few days any ways for a motor swap so ill probally rip it down then.

Ok, well my motor blew up after taking a really long and brutal beating, I am taking my tranny out along with the motor when I do the swap and was gonna tear my tranny down and try and fix this reverse problem. The thing im having trouble with is finding a stock reverse gear, and lever. It was for my girlfriend but some fuckers stole my TRE stage 3 tranny, fully built motor, transfer, poly mounts, act 2600 with unsprung disc and alot of other stuff. I checked Jacks transmissions and they had nothing, checked bushur and shepherd they had nothing. Just need to find a site that has everything so when I find out whats wrong I can order it. Thanks

IF it is popping out of reverse i'd suggest that the shifter cables aren't adjusted correctly, it definitely isn't the syncro. The syncro is only there to slow the gears while shifting. I'd highly doubt that the reverse gears are damaged, they are straight cut gears, by the way, they are on the input side of the tranny, there is an idler gear that engages reverse.

Thats what I ment the lever but I couldnt think of the name. It is not the cable cause these are brand new cables and it will always pop outta reverse no matter what. Im tearing it down this weekend and just need to find these parts cause maybe the lever is bent or the gear itself is shot.

If you are going to be needing any transmission parts than lets talk over pm's. As for tearing it down, these are real easy to , just make sure that you remove the 14mm head bolt in the caseing on the rear that holds the reverse idles in place. IT won't come apart without removing that. Basically just remove the end case cover. Then remove the snap ring in the viscous coupler, there will be a little ball in the shaft that holds the output shaft in, remove that and the output shaft. Next remove the 2 nuts on the 5 gear assembly, and the roll pin in the 5th shift fork. You can then remove the 5th gear assembly, this might require a puller depending on how old the tranny is, they can pull off easily, or they can be stuck as hell. At this point you can remove the 3 bolts that are side by side on the front of the case by the end of the case, they will have springs and balls behind them. Make sure to keep them separate from the other ball, they are different sizes. Once you have those out you can remove the bearing plate, and them pull the center diff out. At this point you can pull the reverse idler bolt and all the case bolts that hold the case together and then oull the 2 pieces of case apart. From there you will be able to access the reverse parts, and pull the intermediate and input shaft if you need to. You'll need to remove the roll pins on the shift forks where they hook to the rail to remove the 2 shafts.

I've been thru multiple trannies before but never messed with the reverse. I've had mine apart when I bought the car because the center diff was blown and the viscous was welded, so that cleared up alot of problems. I was thinking that when the center diff blew maybe something hit the reverse but I didn't have any big chunks in the tranny, just in the diff. I should have it out soon and when I do Ill pm you about parts.
