I just bought a built 2.3 with 5k miles on it.

The deck is oringed (copper I think), I was wondering if its normal to have the tops of the pistons COVERED in black crap. I assume it's from running rich but damn, 5k miles and they are totally black, not at all silver.

So I was just gonna clean them off and take off the pan to make sure it truley is a JE/Eagle combo but I also found that the honing hardly is visible and cyl. 4 has a few of the up and down grooves in the wall. Does this sound like it was done right/have 5k miles?

Haha yeah I knew that would be asked after I submitted the thread, I have 30 days with it before It's all said and done, got it from Remy if you know him. He said teamzrp built it in NY but didnt have receipts so I checked his background and history and figure it was probably the truth since I found no evidence of him doing it himself, and he's a great guy to talk to. But it is bored and o'ringed so I just assume it was built by a shop too. I am going to take it to JNZ I think just to make sure I shouldnt get it honed or something. But I dont understand why the honing is like gone? And the slight groves on the one cyl wall?

Oh and he said the cold compression was 170-173-173-170 which is good, but should it be that when it's cold? I'm thinking maybe the wall clearances are too tight and the rings wiped the hone clear, as well as the grooving? I'm just trying to figure out if this is normal wear and tear already.

I can get some pics tomorrow if needed.

Do you mean there is no cross hatch in the cylinders? Are they shinny smooth? Any grooves you can feel with a fingernail? My 2.3l cold compression #s are similar. Hot compression is 195psi across.

Weel my dad says no but with a light I can see it, on all but #4 which has the up and down grooves and yes you can just feel the slight defection on the wall. The cross hatch doesnt look too fresh though, it kinda seems like it is flush but definitely can see the marks. They are pretty shiny but the pistons are totally black, like the inside of an old tailpipe black.
