Test Pipe or High Flow Cat?

I have a 92 Eclipse GS non turbo. I currently have pacestter headers and the pacesetter cat-back exhaust. I would like to add a test pipe in place of the catalytic converter, but I haven't been able to find one that will fit this exhaust without modifications. I found one at mach V, but I don't think it will fit easily. Does anyone know where I can get a test pipe for this exhaust. If not then do you know of any high flow cats that are worth buying. Any feedback would be appreciated thanks.

high flow cats

Road Race Engineering has a 2.5" high flow cat for $99. It doesn't have any flanges, and it's not cut to fit anything in particular, so you will have to do some hacksaw/welding work of your own. You'll need the cat section from here:

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/exhaustparts.htm

and the 2.5" universal exhaust flanges from here:

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/flangesandgaskets.htm

So, for $99 for the cat, and $8 per flange, you've got yourself a high-flow 2.5" cat. Not bad.

Also, you could dink around JC Whitney's web page and try to find a general fit cat here:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/catsubpic.jhtml?CATID=3171&BQ=jcw2

or one that may or may not fit your car here:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=166435&BQ=jcw2&_requestid=7745

Remember, it's illegal to modify or replace your stock catalytic converter in most states, with certain exceptions. As far as I know, most states allow it if the car's got over 50k miles on it, and/or the cat's damaged beyond functioning, so keep a big hammer handy ;)

oh, by the way

How are those Pacesetter parts workin out for ya? I have a 96 GS that I'm thinkin about stickin an exhaust on, just for sound and resale value. The thing's an automatic, and I hate it. I only bought an auto cause I was sick of driving a stick in city traffic, and wasn't looking forward to replacing clutches again. My last car was a '90 1.8l 5 speed. For as small as the engine was, that car had some groove to it, and the seats were comfy. I'm thinkin about stickin an exhaust on this one, ridin it out till the end of winter, and then tryin to sell it or trade it in to get a GS-T or a TSi. I wanna get my hands on the 4G63 so I can get into more serious mods. I don't think it's worth dumpin the 2 or 3 grand I have written up on my whiteboard into an automatic. No matter how much horsepower and torque I have, I'm still gonna be limited by the tranny.

Jdawg92 GS I have the same setup as you w/ the pacesetter header w/ thier 2.5inch exhaust... what i did was punch out the cat. or "hollowed" it out... i didnt see the point in spenindg 100 dollars on a catalltic converter... the only thing you might have to worry about is emissions... they got rid of that down here in miami soo that's why i did it...

1990 Eclipse 2.0L n/t 5spd
* Header & 2.5inch exhaust w/ punched out cat
* Act Clutch 2100
* Suspension Tech Lowering Springs
** after timing belt is done will be getting Injen Intake :p **

Pacesetter parts have been great so far. I heard a lot of bad things, but I've been very impressed so far. It was moderatly louder when I added the exhaust and header, again this is without a high flow cat. Also I replaced the pacesetter muffler that came with the cat-back and put an Apexi muffler on to louden it up and get the chrome showing from the back. I would definitely recommend pacesetter to anyone looking for an inexpensive means to an impressive exhaust. Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming.

Well, if you're looking for a cheap means of dodging the five-oh, just take off your cat, take a pipe the general size, and smash it completely through your cat, effectively hollowing it out ;) learned that from a friend of mine in my club. it works!

that's what i did to mine :p

1990 Eclipse 2.0L n/t 5spd
* Headers & 2.5inch exhaust w/ punched out cat.
* Act Clutch 2100
* Suspension Tech Lowering Springs
* Razo Short Shift Knob
**after timing belt is done will be getting an Ijen Intake

LOL i just took a long screw driver and an hour of my time and hollowed out my cat....I bought a cat bypass for $70 and didn't fit grrrrrr now I have to find a car it can fit onto so I can sell it....hmmmm maybe the GST GSX guys might want it....;) but hollowed out cats do sound terrible...atleast mine does...shit keeps rattling...

i love the way my car sounds w/ the punched out cat and exhaust...no rattling or anything here :p
most of the stories i heard about pacesetter is that they crack during winter in the cold... i live in miami soo i dont have to worry bout that :p

Summit racing sells a high flow cat by Catco for $99 that fit DSMs nicely. THats if you want to keep on the legal side of things.

I also have the Pacesetter exhaust. One thing I did was take off that ricey tip though. It was really crappy sounding. It still has some rice to it, but not as bad. Ive been wondering about the header though. Is there a big differance when installed? I also heard that you have to do some custumizing to git it in, is that true?

#15 ·
haha, i did the same thing:)

anyways, when i did the install on my 1990, i threw a pipe in there for the hell of it and it actually is loud, don't get me wrong, it sounded cool.... just a little too much noise for me though in a daily driver

I ordered that catco hi-flow cat that TALONLVR was talking about and it sounds GREAT! and i gained top end and didn't seem to lose any low end acceleration either, so far it's been a perfect combination

you can get race/test pipes for around 30 or 40 from http://www.testpipe.com thats where i got mine...
it has both flanges on it and they spin freely so you can adjust it... they gave me new bolts.. and a choice of 2.5 and 2.75 or 3.0 i forge. i got the 2.5

hope this helps

Do those testpipes fit an n/t? It aint' bad, but i'm getting ready to get Apex N1 exhaust and a ractive cold air intake, shit i might as well take care of the cat while i'm puttin on the Apex. BTW, do I need to get a gasket to bolt that on or does it come with the exhuast?

I think I like the catco high flow cat from summit racing. Seems like a good deal for 100 bucks. I have one question though. Do you think it will bolt up to the pacesetter headers and pacesetter exhaust without any problems?

#20 ·
I don't know, i'm more about leaving it off..there are a few holes in the cat law, i think i read somewhere that if your car has over 50k on it, you don't necessiarily have to have one. Don't count on that though, cause i'm not for sure. Also, cats can clog up at 20k enough to lose near 10 hp. Again, or so i'm told. I got an email from rollhard today saying they're officially out of the Apex N1, i don't know where the shit i'm gonna find one now.

the catco cat is a universal and adjustable cat so yes it will fit pacesetter. I have pacesetter headers and catback on mine, but I cut off that worthless restrictive muffler and welded on a SS straight through design. I also had a heck of a time putting my headers. but they work.

i got my 2.5" race pipe from a guy off ebay for $30. anyone looking for one should check on there once in a while. also, if you want a good header for the 1st gen NT, go with a Borla. yeah, they are around $340 at nopi, but its worth it

I have a question about using a testpipe.
And here it is.
When using a testpipe, doesn't the check engine light come on?
Heres another one.
Will this cause any problems in the long term?
And yet again.
When you put the CAT back in place will the check engine light turn off?
If everything is cool with it....
Hell yea! Im going testpipe!

i talked with someone from www.extrememotorsports.com, and they said that the check engine light will likely come on with a 2g, but it doesnt with a 1g (NT at least) because of the location of the 0xygen sensors. they also said there are no adverse affects on your car. but there are on the environment (those are there words)

Here's the low down
on the 2G n/t's, there are two oxygen sensors. I just put my EVO on and hollowed my catalytic converter, so i know. One is right before the catalytic converter, one is about 6 inches after it on the exhaust pipe. These sensors do not affect a/f ratios, they are simply OBD II's way of testing to see if you're cleaning the air or not. Your ECU will lean out the air and richen the air without you knowing about it once every 750-1000 miles. It does this to see whether or not you are cleaning the air. If you aren't, it bitches at you. There are a few solutions to the problem, but they come with risks. You can a) disassemble the gauges and take out the CE bulb (its easier than you think) or you can b) figure out a way to vent the second O2 sensor to the atmosphere, maybe put it above the pipe with some tin foil? I heard that a certain company is developing a solution, but it's not ready yet. Just gotta deal with it until then.
