I purchased and installed a new trans from TRE after my stocker broke. My old trans had so much damage that to rebuild it would have cost nearly the same as getting the new trans w/ upgrades, so went with the new one. I wound up getting a factory new trans, with a 4spider diff, TRE spec rails, TRE spec heavy duty single syncro 3/4, TRE spec evo shift forks as main upgrades, along with the other little tricks they do. I also got the shorter shifter select lever installed, and it helps to considerably shorten the throw of the shifter.

Because i was installing a new 2nd gen trans in my 1g, there were a couple of small problems. The starter bolt holes on the new trans didn't quite line up with the holes on the 1g engine backplate, so i had to drill the backplate holes out a little to get the bolts thru to bolt up the starter. The starter works fine despite the slightly different alignment. Also, the 2g scattershield wouldn't fit right, it had clearance problems with the water pipe/lower radiator hose and wastegate actuator on my 16g. I could have probably made it fit with some cutting and trimming of the scattershield, but i opted to leave it off.

I didn't get a chance to go back to the track before they closed, so it's only experienced around the town driving and occasional street abuse, along with some rally type driving in the snow:). It felt a little tight at first, but after about 500 miles it started to shift like butter. I really like the shorter throw of the shorter lever, and the shifts feel very direct. I can't wait to get back to the track this year, and will post how well the trans holds up.

My brother got basically the same upgrades in his 1g rebuild, and ran it all last season without a problem. He was running mostly low 12's around 114mph all season, but managed few 11.90's at 115. Not really monster power at all, but it held up well against alot of hard launches. He cut consistant 1.7's 60 ftr's all season, and ~10 1.6X 60 ftr's, his best being a 1.61, all on some worn Kuhmo supra's with stock rims.

TRE has been around for a long time, and helped to pioneer alot of the upgrades that are currently available. They have recently made furthur developements to improve the torque capacity and shift quality of their transmissions, enough so to make the double 3/4 syncro obsolete. I believe they also working on upgrades for the EVO8.

We took my brother's trans back to them to be inspected after the season was over, and everything looked good. He is having his trans rebuilt with their new developements and the shorter shift lever for next season, so i'll post how they work out for him.

I'd highly recommend TRE to anyone who is looking to get their trans rebuilt or for upgrades for their trans. They are very helpful, have great customer service, and alot of knowledge and experience.

I have to agree with both of you. Although mine is almost as old as Sleepers, I imagine the new stuff is really good too. So far everything on mine has been smooth and solid. I would recommend TRE and use them again if I had to.

my TRE experience

My TRE tranny has been fantastic. I have cut many 1.7x's on this tranny, spinning all four plenty of times, full weight w/subs, 235/45 17's all around. Lots of abuse, and still shifts like a dream.

I happen to like GM synchroshift better than the BGII if anyone is interested. I've got TRE modded dual synchro's 2-4th gears, and all the other goodies, and I couldn't be happier!

Only thing I ran into is a possible broken synchro spring in 3rd gear - in no way related to TRE's work as far as I know - but nonetheless, I was pretty disappointed to get the car running, sell my spare car, and have the darn clunck/crunch in 3rd. Gotta get that fixed some day...

They don't list the shorter shift lever you mentioned on their website. How much was it and did they need to modify anything in order to install it?
I'm not sure how much the shorter shift lever is or what modifications are necessary to install it. They asked me if i wanted to try it out and i said sure. I may have been one of the first people to get the shorter shift lever, as i had never heard of it before from them, i could be wrong though. I'm sure if you email Jon (jon@teamrip.com) he can give you more info about it.

awdfun, have you talked to Jon about the possible broken syncro spring?

Nice review on the TRE tranny. I would have mine worked on by them, but Shepherd is in my back yard.

Thanks for the compliment on the review. It really is a blessing to have a DSM trans specialist close to you.:D I'm sure Shep does an excellent job as well.

redawdturbo, I did talk to jon about it. He'll pay for parts if I pay for labor. I kind of raised an eyebrow over that, since it happened under the warranty and all, and after following his break in procedure religiously. I can't imagine a synchro spring is too expensive, but he quoted me something like 3 hours @ $60/hour, plus shipping.

In the mean time work and family situations have kept me from dropping the tranny and being without a car for a week or two or three :(

I can understand about being without a car and having a family. Perhaps he will have to replace other parts as well as the syncro spring while he's at it, such as bearings, syncro, hub, or gear if their damaged. Hope you can get it taken care of someday.

Just for the record the 2G shield was not specifically designed to fit on a 2G trans that was installed in a 1G car. It will work though. The scattershield has recently been redesigned to fit even closer to the bellhousing to help with the fit but either way the water pipe will always need to be massaged to allow it to fit. It just can not be avoided.

BTW I also love my TRE transmission.

redawdturbo - I hear you there. I'm planning on replacing the hub and slider and all the other classic "worn syncro" wear parts due to not getting it fixed right away. Just bought a truck to haul my bikes around (and tow my cars home after they break  ), so someday soon this tranny will be fixed..

I thought i'd give an update on the transmission since i've been able to get back to the track and drive it like it's meant to be driven.

I have alway been kinda a wussy when it comes to shifting. Last year i granny shifted every gear, and my 1/2 shift was pathetic. My 330ft and 1/8th mile times have improved consistently by ~.15 sec over last year with the stock trans due to my newfound shifting ability, a trans that shifts flawlessly, the shorter throw shift lever, along with a few shifting lessons from my brother:D. He has an MSD with a clutch cut, so you don't have to lift off the gas to shift. I was able to practice shifting this way in his car to try to get the feel of it. I was amazed at how fast he shifts, and how much more momentum the car keeps up from it.

I am much more confident shifting the car now, and it really feels easy to shift. Not loosy goosy at all, just very solid, direct, and smooth. It's beginning to feel like it pulls itself into the next gear!I became so confident that i decided not to lift to shift anymore, even though i don't have any clutch cut device like an MSD or TMO type ecu, just the stock rev limiter.

I was pretty nervous on the first pass, but the trans didn't put up a lick of resistance to my shifts w/o lifting, even though i did bounce off the 7.5k limiter between the 1/2 and 2/3 shifts pretty bad. It felt fucking awsome to drive the car like that, it is one of the best feelings i've experienced while dragracing. After a few more runs i was able to shift fast enough without hitting the limiter. The same night i ran a new personal best et of 12.03 @113.95 on a 1.69 60ft, with a new best 1/8 mile of 7.69, and my first ever 330 under 5 seconds of 4.96!

After getting a few small hp related problems solved on the car( that i had been unaware of probably since last year) i went back to the track last wednesday. I ran 2 12.2's@114 on 1.73 60fts and a 12.1 at 114 on a 1.72 60ft. 330's were all in the 5.0X range, with 1/8 miles around 7.8X. Then on last pass, i ran a new best of 11.98 @ 115mph, on a 1.74 60ft, the 330 @ 5.01, with an 1/8th of 7.69 @90.68mph.

I have ~20 passes on the car this year, and so far not one missed shift. The car weighs 3070lbs with me in it. I've cut 2 high 1.6 60fts, and ~8 60ft's in the mid to low 1.7 range. My goal this year is to see some 11.8's around 116-118mph. I have a few more things to try out, but we'll see how things go.

My brother's trans is holding up great as well. With TRE's new developments in his trans, he only broke it in for ~ 50 miles before hitting the strip and driving it like he stole it. After ~50 miles his trans felt as smooth as my trans did after ~500 miles! The usual "breakin notchyness" was completely absent. You can read some of his comments about this years season here.

We have some videos to post as soon as my friend hosts them. My brother has some pretty cool in car footage of his runs, where you can see him shifting the shit out of the car.

I'm looking at getting the same tranny rebuild you listed, about how much are you talking about here though?

Yes TRE is the best!!!

Any that autocrosses, road races, or rallies should definelty get a front LSD! Really helps the car rotate and get ride of that stinking understeer!!

Jon and Ming build some nice gearboxes..... They built a nice unit for my 1g Rally car...... Its gone 2 events now and some testing with alot of 5000rpm stutter launches and it feels great.....

Also the KAAZ diff they installed is very nice and the car rotates awsome on gravel/dirt.........

I plan to send it to Jon for a mid season review and to see what wears the most in a rally car......

Depending on how much damage there is to your transmission, a transmission rebuild with my upgrades could run you anywhere from~$1600 to ~$2000. I'd email them to see if they have any specials though. They often have rebuilt tranny's ready to go at good prices.
