Turbo MR2 highway race

I raced a red Turbo MR2 last night. He had a nice dual exhaust system, wheels, lowered, and I'm sure a bunch more mods. We started from a roll of about 65mph side by side. He hit it, and I responded after he took off. I was in 4th gear at ~4000rpm. My turbo spooled instantly and I basically walked all over the guy till about 115mph. Then we went again and I stopped at 125 with the Toyota about oh....15 car lengths behind me. My car was still pulling extremely hard even at 125. It was apparently upset that I let off the throttle, because as soon as I did I got a nice backfire. I wonder if I shot a fireball out the rear :D

The other driver was really cool about it. Came up and gave me a "nice race" hand gesture. And no, it wasn't a finger..heh.

This was my first real race since the turbo/intercooler/everything upgrade. I raced a 2003 Maxima on the highway too, but I don't really consider a family sedan much competition. (the MR2 did much better)

Thank you Forced Performance :)

Nice kill!

Damn I need to mod my car soon. I've had it for about three weeks and I'm already trying to find any way I can to earn some money while I'm at school to mod this bitch...

Im just wondering what mods you have to put 15 cars on a turbo MR2? You know they have a top speed of 150 stock? I honestly dont think he was trying hard unless the 13.2 in your siggy need to be updated.

Im not trying to start a flame war, but when I had the basic mods on my MR2 with the upgraded intercooler and VPC, I raced a newer Eclipse turbo with a few mods including a FMIC and it wasnt even funny. If you have the mods too do it cool, I apologize, but I have been around the MR2 enough to know what its capabilities are.

You can see my mods here:

http://www.rit.edu/~jwl2033/talon.html

The 13.2 was with the car untuned (.98 on the o2), I had another person in the car datalogging for me, I couldn't launch for fear of destroying my 3 bolt rear end (2.4 60' time), and that was at 18psi.

The top end on the Green is sick. Even with the stock cams.

You have a nice mods list and I dont doubt you beat him, But I know either he was mostly stock or didint try very hard. Like I said they have a top speed of 150 mph stock and not to mention you will lose some powertop end being AWD. It would be interesting to see you run a MR2 with a few more mods. Good kill though,

BTW how did you know it was a turbo?

hey NT_noproblem

he ran a 13.2 on a turbo that flow 405cfm....he now has a tuned turbo with many supporting mods that flows over 700cfm. K. Loren Jacob from FP "slowdsm on dsm board" ran a 11.5 @125mph on his full weight 2g eclipse.... thats a damn powerfull turbo....so I could see very easily how he walked him so hard even if the MR2 had BPU.....the GREEN is a killer. I'm not calling you a fool or anything, but the greens are awesome....also don't konw that much about MR2's....fill me in a little, what do YOU run 1/4 and what is your trap speed? Your MR2 is SICK! :) Also, the eclipse that you raced that had a front mount, my still of had its stock turbo, and if it was a 2g with stock turbo that you raced, the front mounts really don't do anything. They may take like .2 off you E.T. tops. Just tell me a little about what you have and what you can do.
No hard feelings NT_noproblem

Im not sayin I dont believe him I dont even know what the "green" turbo is? As for my car my 1 and only time at the track I ran a 13.8 @107 this is with major problems I had a blown headgasket and bad 2nd gear syncros( couldnt shift clean after 4000 rpm) Oh well next time I will be ready. As a matter of fact I run the same turbo some of you guys do. I have the Greddy TD06 20G turbo and a whole long list of mods including a full built motor and Haltech EMS.

Oh and BTW Om not offended at all by what your sayin RYNO this is a chat board. All Im sayin from my experiences with an MR2 it didnt sound right pulling that hard. If the "green" turbo makes that much power cool, I guess I need to learn more:D Also before someone says oh you only ran a 13.8 and your talking. I can show you pix of my motor after it was taken apart just 1 week after I ran at the track, lets just say my JE Pistons and SS Ferrea Valves and HKS metal HG was gone. The car is actually in the shop now, almost done maybe this week and I should be pushing 400+ rwhp without my next mod a 50-75 shot of N2o.

Sorry to get off topic, but like I said before if you did win thats an awesome kill, my apologies :D

MR2's top stock speed is 150mph, but can they push that much? I don't think so... I was with my friend in his 91 MR2 Turbo yesterday, and all he has is an intake and the max he could push it to was 113mph. After that his car wouldn't go anymore since he didn't have enough mods to back up that much power. Nice kill:D

I've raced the turbo MR2's and from the sounds of it you should have won no problem but the 15 cars sounds wrong. Do you know how big of a 1/4mi time difference 15 car lengths is? Then again I know a old 88 Familia GTX that used to beat the stock turbo MR2.

Dude sorry but thats the stupidist thing I've ever heard. 113 mph top speed on a turbo MR2 (even stock) Stock Civic's can go 113 dont tell me one of Toyotas best sports car would only do that speed. I can send you a link to the MR2 board and ask what MR2's run top end. I know before all my mods I hit 130 mph with plenty to go. Remember they are 200 hp and 200 ft lb of torque stock in what a 2800 lb car. What does an Eclipse turbo come with 205-210 hp in a 3000 + lb car? so your saying the Eclipse can only do 113???

Like I said top speed STOCK is 150 mph, yes not all of them can do that but they are pretty close not 113:rolleyes: I know some guys in MR2's running 160+ and I know one guy hit 183 with less mods than me. Plese if you dont know enough about the MR2 dont try and tell me they cant go over that without some mods.

Let me clear up one thing really fast...

The first time we raced, it was much closer. (maybe 5-8 car lengths). The second time I just kept on the throttle rather than letting off. I am sure he got tired and quit before I did. (hence the 15 car lengths).
The car just hits 125+ SO fast now. Before I felt as though I was pushing the 14B too hard to get it up that high. I guess the easiest way to describe the feeling of WOT in 5th gear at 125 on a Green would be to compare it to a strong 3rd gear pull on a 14B. It just keeps pulling, and pulling...

If I ever get the balls/track time to redline my Talon in 5th gear, I am positive I will still have full boost and the car would be pulling stronger than ever.

Put it like this a GREEN is like your 20g and then much more. They can support 500WHP I have been told. And he said 15 cars on the freeway not the 1/4 so that means the distance travel can be much more. My friend has a 91 MR2 turbo They pull very nicely and launch well too stock for stock they are slightly faster than a DSM but we have much better aftermarket support and can be much faster in the long run. I have aother friend also with a MR2 with a 20g. On the street there is lots of lag but on the freeway he pretty untouchable. Im sure they can hit 150 stock, I don't know about AWD top end but I could pull ally the way up to my limiter of 135 in 4th on my GST in no time stock so I don't see why a MR2 wouldn't be able to.

Jeff..........

Thanks for clearing that up, that makes perfect sense to me, now I can visualize it. Once again nice kill, who makes the "green" turbo?

Here's a question for you guys. I have the TD06 20G on my car and I hope to be pushing 400 + rwhp on it, but it takes a lot of supporting mods to get there. I know some of you run it or used to run it and make the hp a lot easier. Is there some trick us MR2'ers are missing? The TD06 is a very common turbo for the MR2 but most people are in the 300-350 whp range, with a few running 400+

Low Flying......

Thanks for the info.....Im not trying to start anything over here but to me 113 is ridiculous unless the car has major problems. I know I will be trapping that and then some in the 1/4 once I get my car back. also there is a pretty good aftermarket for the MR2, not as good as the Eclipse but it's getting there. The places are just harder to find:D Believe me I know, I could have bought a new car cash with what I've put into my MR2:eek:

The Green turbo is made by the guys at www.ForcedPerformance.com

It comes in various levels, but I went with the most common for street use. (best spoolup). I have the ported 7cm Mitsu turbine housing mated with the TD06 Compressor housing. FP uses a "secret" compressor/turbine wheel combo, both Garret. It uses their monster thrust bearing and an oil cooled mitsu center cartridge.

Here it is installed on my car...

Good Kill!!

A stock 1991 MR2 Turbo runs 14.3 1/4
Top speed of 149mph electronically speed limited, there are a few in the 11s and 10sec 1/4 mile, and some people remove the speed limiter and have run 185mph+ so not to take anything away from the kill but the mr2 might have been stock or lightly moded, most mr2s that have been moded comparable to what DSM'ers do can run very good 1/4 mile times and have very good top end also depends on the driver ect, I have both MR2T and 95 Talon AWD both fun cars I love both.

I own both

91 mr2 turbo
91 GVR4

The MR2 top speed is probably as stated ~150, I've only had the balls to do ~130, but she had more left in her!

Is there some trick us MR2'ers are missing? The TD06 is a very common turbo for the MR2 but most people are in the 300-350 whp range, with a few running 400+
Although comparing two 2L engines one would expect similar results this is not the case.

The 4G63 has a larger throttle body, larger runners, larger valves, and much lower compression (7.8 vs 8.8). This combination yields an engine that although has less low end and slower turbo spool, will yield MUCH higher peak power/torque. Although unconfirmed spark timing on the 4G63 is far more forgiving on a modded turbo motor.
