I got a problem with my valve guide 2 of them are bent ok i know i need to replace them so could i replace them myself or do i need to have a shop do them i was doin my head gaskest and found this out???

p.s. its a 420a motor

The best thing to do is pony up a couple hundred bucks and have a shop go through the head and make sure that you don't have any other problems. The guides have to be pressed in and out which isn't something most DSMers can do at home.

Don't mean to hijack thread but what is the relation between valve guides and valve stem seals? Asking because I have the classic synptoms of smoke out the tailpipe when idling but not driving indicating bad valve stem seals and thinking about replacing them but now wondering if bad valve guides can be the problem? Btw my compression #'s are good.

If compression is good, then I would say something to do with turbo or coolant leak. What are the Compression numbers? Is the smoke blue or white? Do a wet test when you do a compression test next time. Will determine if its rings or valves.

The valve stem seals sit atop of the valve guides. How many miles are in the head/engine?
