Oh boy, what a blast from the past!

Popular in the 60's and 70's, they were springy, 10" long metal posts that looked kinda like a short antenna. They would clamp onto the lower edge of the vehicle body and literally 'scrape' the curb when you were close enough, letting you know not to get any closer via the sound of them touching. Very popular in urban areas where parallel parking was common, they primarily protected whitewall tires from damage.

Back then, they were also a standard item on what we called, ahem, 'pimpmobiles' (no offense meant, but this is what real pimps, whether black, brown, or white, usually drove back in the day). Such cars also sported other, uh, let's say, 'regional' stying accessories, such as Continental spares, horoscope signs, superwide whitewalls, wire wheels, fender skirts, gold trim, etc. Urban chic of the time, if you will!

Some of these themes from the black community also found their way into the lowrider scene, which is a close cousin, but with its own distinct flavor.

Can you tell I grew up in Chicago, but was born and also lived in Cali (Orange County)? I guess I have been exposed to a lot of automotive trends over the years!
