DSM's Street Potential

I am curious what kind of performance you can get out of them and still have them streetable (Streetable to me means street tires, still has interior and seats, no race gas, and not huge turbo lag) and how much it would cost roughly to do it up.

wow, $5000? isnt that kinda steep?

This will put a 1g into the 12's for $1200. That is probably when a great driver, great car, great conditions, etc...

Realistically, I would feel better telling you to get the $1200 in mods and maybe spend some more money.

BTW, that is just 1 example list of stages. Not the holy grail of stages for a DSM.

I would say get a exhaust $500?, intake $50, manual boost controller $50 and a boost gauge $50?. That could get you into the 13's but your now limited with a crappy fuel pump $200. From here, i dont know, but guess you want a bigger turbo 16G which runs like $800 I think.

This is what I have been going by, tell me if im wrong guys?

to do it right that is not steep. and he said low 12's. there is a difference of low 12's and your general 12's. to be consistant and reliable i believe that 5k is about right.

Here's a low buck formula for a cheap, reliable street/strip car:

20G with internal gate $1100
dumped 02 housing $100
2G manifold $175
full press bent 2.5" exhaust $535
FMIC kit $850
2G MAF w/old style AFC $300
ACT 2600 $400
550s $290
Pump $150
2.5" turbo inlet pipe $50
Manual boost controller $50
K&N $50

For about $4k you've got easy low 12s in a full weight AWD car. Take out some weight and you've got solid 11s. It'll spool like crazy which makes it perfect for going from a roll against those pesky V8s. If you wanna get even cheaper, do a big 16G and twin stock side mount ICs!

Is it possible to have a street able talon in the 10's? Shepherd i heard drives his on the road couple times a week.
You can have a car that you can drive on the street that run's 10's or nines like John. But it wouldn't be street LEGAL. Passing emmisions is going to be a problem once you break into the 11's.

if you check out Import Tuners or Turbo mag, they usually feature DSM's once every 2 months or so, sportscompact also... I've seem 400hp daily drivers... and those were consisent pulls on the dyno.... as for cost... dont remember what all they had done....

Sorry couldnt be more helpful..

even if you could pass the sniffer, theres no way in hell a external dumping wastegate is going to pass the sniffer, or visual inspections, along with most other parts on the car if you are in California.

12 second street DSM's are all over. This is on pump gas, full interior, and street tires. Our cars are the perfect recipe for street tires unlike many other cars out there. 11's are a little harder to get on pump gas, but it has been done. Usually the good streetable ones hit low 12's on pump gas by your standards. I should be a solid high 12 second car on pump gas. I will be goign to MIR this friday so we'll find out then as it is my first real 1/4m track but my 1/8th mile times say I should hit high 12's on pump gas.

Heh, In cali no..., but most parts of TX still arent required to do emmissions checks, for Obi and the guys in CS, Burton/Brenham area isnt required (or wasnt last year when I left TX) to do emmissions checks, stnd blinkers brakes, headlights, leaks and all that nice stuff.... Where I worked wasnt required ;) but i think they closed down now they may still do inspections though just not mechanic work....
