Ok guys, as some of you might remember, I am overhauling my engine.

I was in doubt whether posting this in the General Tech or here, but I figured that due to the delicate process that I am about to do, the Advanced section is more appropriate...

My poor 4G63 has been on the floor of my buddy's shop for a whole month now. The first day he got it, he removed the valve cover and started to remove the (I think six) bolts that hold the head in place...

Well, to make a long story short, the upper left bolt (looking on top of the engine with the Turbo towards your knees) got busted.

I didn't really understand what happened to it, and I am sorry I can't be more precise than this, but morale of the story after one month of waiting my friend gave me three conditions:

1- I either wait and let him break two more bits for trying drill it out
2- I bring it to a machine shop and spend 20-40-60 or 100 bux to get it out
3- I go invest 30 bucks on a Carbide (hope I spelled it right) drill bit, go to his place and entertain myself for a couple of hours...

I decided to go for the last one of course, and here's my question:

What type of Bit should I get? For your information, the head of the stripped stud is still there, and my friend was trying to explain me that if I can grind it down until it looks flat with the hole, he will be able to finally pull the head out and it will be easier to remove it from the bottom...

As you can see I am ignorant in this area because I've never worked on an engine, and if you need more info in order to be able to answer my question, let me know and I'll try to get in touch with my friend and ask him...

Please let me know what type of bit should I buy, and where to get it, because I am getting crazy without my baby... I am driving a friend's 1990 Talon ESi (I love it, it looks just like mine) but I miss the good old whistle, besides, I am going around with no papers and I am risking really bad if I get pulled over... and last, he will need it any day, and I will be walking when he will ask me to give it back to him...

Thank you in advance,

Walter

*knuckle head! take it to a machine shop and let them do it. It will cost you a whole lot less than you buying a new head.
They will remove the stud and tap the hole and then use a helix coil to put new threads in the head. Not a job for a novice.
Please take it to a shop!

BTW...This is by no means advanced...

First Id recommend the machine shop.....

If for some reason you still insist on getting it out your self, I've had GREAT results with a carbide Dremel bit..... but take your time and don't go all the way through, if you can't clean up the area behind it(ie... in the head)
