So I've been hearing a lot of people on the forums saying why get a cai when the short ram will do the same thing for a lot less. Ive been searching the AEM short rams and cai, which is the better pick for a 98 gs?

It's more common to see CAI, but mine is just a CAI turned into a short RAM on my 98 RS. When I got it, I really didn't know how to install it, since it came with no manual and at the time, I didn't really have access to the internet, since I was changing ISPs, so I really wanted it on. I ran it down (but didn't know about running it into the fender-well) and it came off going down the highway -- I ran over that nice new K&N Air Filter. It was hilarious, but I was pissed. I had to run to Circuit City to buy a cheap air filter, cut the rubber from the old one, cut my intake pipe, and run it as a slightly-longer than CAI, short-ram intake. It's pretty nice though -- I enjoy it. I'm still probably going to buy an AEM v2 intake for my car, since I can't find the rest of the piping. I'm doing this mainly because the Short-Ram heats up like a bitch and the cold-air would be sucking in cooler air from under the car instead of the short-ram sucking in the hot engine air.

Just my two cents with a dumb story thrown in. Hope it helps.

EDIT: Here's a pic of it by the way.

i like a short ram with a heat sheild around it
It's still hot air being sucked in so a heat sheild does nothing.
I'm going to buy a cold air soon I got the plastic plate that fills the hole in the front left bottom of the plastic poped out to make sure cold air gets under the drivers side looks like The GS-T Alter Ego!!! BuuHahahahaha!!!!!:)

CAI is a lot better. My girlfriend has her AEM one on her 99 RS and the filter sits right in the the front opening of the front bumper. So more air is produce. Unlike a short ram that will encounter less air and since it sits in the engine bay collects heat from the engine (as far as air).

Better. In optimal conditions. (sunny day, dry roads, 60-70 degrees...etc.)

I live in Florida. Where it rains almost everyday. Where I live the streets flood. Still my girlfriend has no problems with her CAI. When she lived with her parents her street would flood over some small shower. CAI still works in the rain. You can't run over some huge puddle but its the same for a Short Ram. Go over some deep water and it comes right up into your engine bay. So either way CAI or Short Ram you can still seize your engine by rain water/deep water/deep puddles. Well look how many idiots drive their stock vehicles through deep water and then find out their stuck and sieze their motor and their intake is above like most stock vehicles. So I wouldn't consider weather a factor. You get more hp gains from a CAI as a Short Ram, unless you buy a Short Ram and fabricate something to bring air from the front all the way to the filter.
