I won't go one way or another with the whole suby thing.
In ways I like them and in ways I don't.
I'm sure its how you feel about DSM's.
But I can tell you one thing.
I've watched STi's run.
And I haven't been all that impressed.
You're talking cars that come a few tenths away from 12 second land.
These were modded heavily.
And running 12.99's
12.70's.
I don't mean intake exhaust.
I mean modded.
I've seen rag tag stock looking 1g's pound out effortless 11's.
Not as many 2'gs tho.
And all the wrex's and impreza's...
Yawn...
I never see any fast ones.
Ever.
Maybe just not around here.
Then to make matters worse, my buddy ate ones lunch so bad in his ...
dare I say it... fwd SRT4.
Thats just... man if you own an awd car, and you let a fwd neon put a bus on you from a stop... I'd shoot myself.
These STi's are very capable they just need to be in the right hands. Their aftermarket is young and people are just beginning to figure out what works best, the reason we have such high expectations it because the day the EVO rolled off the assembly line, people were making patch harness to make the DSMLink from their 2G's fit on, and unbolting their 50 trims off their 2G's and putting it on their EVO. Where as the STi wasn't even here till a year later.
I am pretty much indifferent to the whole STi vs EVO/DSM debate, I think there basically the same perfomance, same specs, same car. Kind of like the Camaro SS and the Trans Am WS6. Same car, differnt body style. Lately I have been taking a closer look and I'd just like to point out a few observations, that I have noticed.
Some things I noticed about the STi are:
- 2.5 liter displacement (dont mess with discplacement kids someone is bound to get hurt)
- it has virually no piping at all because of the top mount
- it has 2.75 inch throttle body (this is insane)
- its a RWD setup gone AWD, so it doesnt need polyurethane motor mounts to eliminate wheel hop, the center of gravity is better with the motor sitting that way.
- they come with 6spds standard so you dont have to pay extra money like you would for the mitsubish offering, MR.
- they come with HID's, so you dont need to buy the SSL like you would on an evo.
- they're only running 15 pounds of boost fromt he factory and they can take 19 easy
- they come with coil on plug ignition from the factory.
There has been a lot of support for the EVO because it has such a heritage in the states because of the 1G's and the 2G's.
To me its just like the mustang vs. Camaro. I believe in 2001 the cobra's were getting recalled for not making the horsepower they were supposed to deliver and Ford engineers were trying to find the extra power in a redesigned header. Meanwhile the camaro was being under-rated at 325 flywheel hp and putting down 328hp at the wheels. I mean its no doubt that the camaro was the better car, but the stangs were selling way more than the maro's.
i think that because of the evo being STi's number one competition, and because of the fan fair that the EVO has, their is probably gonna be nothing that Subaru can do to make their STi more popular than the EVO.
Personally as easy and familiar as the EVO's are, i think there has been some serious quality control issues with mistu in the past couple years. Not to mention the 7 bolt dillema, the rusting shock towers on 2G's and the clutch problem on EVO's.
